Roman copper alloy bow brooch of an unusual type, probably a Hod Hill variant of 1st or 2nd century AD date. The brooch is comparatively small and is now in two pieces. The brooch employed a twin lug hinge mechanism. The front of the upper bow is plain except for a horizontal moulding above and beneath the position of the hinge. The bow opens out to a rectangular panel, decorated with a beaded border containing two linear vertical beaded lines, either side of a decorative panel containing irregular-shaped cells, possibly intended for enamel. Beneath the panel the lower bow has broken, …

Small Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Polden Hill type and dating from the 1st century AD. The brooch is near complete, missing only one of the wings and part of the spring, the bow has distorted near the head. The spring is secured by means of a Polden Hill claw type mechanism, with a copper alloy axis bar. The short wing is expanded at the end and is otherwise plain. The dolphin-like bow has corroded and the decoration is no longer discernible, but is likely to have consisted of raised vertical mouldings, as evidenced on the lower bow. The catch-plate extends to the undefined foot. …

Roman copper alloy Trumpet brooch, probably dating to the late 1st to 2nd century AD.. The brooch is incomplete and would have been a small example. The brooch would have employed a spring mechanism and was secured by a single perforated lug. The upper bow had a sub-triangular cross section and was probably decorated with a wide central vertical rib. The central moulding on the bow has corroded but consisted of a rounded button flanked on each side by horizontal mouldings. The remnant of the catch-plate is present.

Roman copper alloy Trumpet brooch, probably dating to the late 1st – 2nd century AD. The brooch is in good condition and is missing only the spring and pin. The spring mechanism was secured by means of a single pierced lug with notches above and below the lug to tension the spring. There is no chain loop at the head. The trumpet head is oval in shape with a sub-triangular bow at the head, suggesting the brooch to belong to the ‘Chester and allied’ type of Trumpet brooch (Hattatt 1987). The upper bow is decorated with a central vertical rib, and low V-shaped moulding…

Head fragment of a bow brooch probably of T shaped type, and probably dating to the late 1st century or early / middle second century AD. The remnant of the bow has a small decorative panel near its top. The panel would appear to contain a row of chevron cells with traces of red enamel surviving. These cells possibly flanked a rectangular panel, centred on a corresponding opposite rows of chevron cells, but the surface has been lost in this area. The remnant of a head loop is visible at the apex of the bow. No traces of decoration survive on the eroded wings. The brooch had a hinge mec…

At the base of the rear of the bow fragment is the beginning of the catch plate.

Incomplete cast copper alloy T-shape brooch, probably of late 1st century or early / middle second century AD. Little of the original surface survives on the bow. The foot is missing, but an area at the base of the fragment suggests some low vertical mouldings ran up the bow. The profile of the bow was likely to be D shaped. At the rear of the base of the bow there is a slot to house the catch plate. The wings survive in comparatively good condition and are plain, except for two incised lines near the end of each side. A scar at the crest of the bow is likely to mark the position of th…
