Record ID: NMGW-D28B2C
Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A hammered gold sheet of uncertain date. The sheet has a maximum length of 51.4mm, width of 39.3mm, 0.7mm thick and weighs 14.76g. The sheet is lacking any diagnostic features so the use and date cannot be determined. Small percussion marks on the surface indicate the sheet was intentionally flattened before being deposited, discarded, or lost. Due to the uncertainty of the date, the object is not considered Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996.

A fragment of an unidentified cast copper alloy object, likely a buckle of uncertain date. The object is plano-convex in section, with a flat reverse and convex obverse. The object terminates in a break at both ends, one across what is likely the 10.4mm wide centre of the buckle frame, the object curves from this point to the other break at the side of the frame. The obverse face is decorated with an incised groove running parallel to the outer edge. The object has a smooth dark green patina covered with speckled brown and green pitting and concretions. The object is relatively undia…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragmentary cast copper alloy object, probably a fitting, of uncertain date. The object is half of a curved or circular fitting and is sub-triangular in section with a surviving overall length of 43.9mm. The surviving terminal is rounded and decorated with a small circular moulding (max thickness 5.0mm) and a small integrally cast knop/spike projecting outwards from the side. The object has an old break at the apex of the curve. The surviving original surface suggests the shallow central ridge was decorated with small notches. The reverse is flat and undecorated. XRF results show t…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragmentary cast copper alloy ring, possibly from a harness, of uncertain date. The ring is missing over half of the hoop in old damage with surviving measurements 25.5mm long x 7.2mm max diameter. The ring is roughly D-shaped/sub-triangular in section with a shallow central ridge along the outer surface and small angular wear facets visible at the breaks. There is no visible evidence for surface decoration. It is difficult to determine function with so little remaining, but it may be a fragment of a harness ring. The metal has a smooth dark green mottled patina and weighs 6.51g. XR…

A cast copper alloy object, probably a ring handle of indeterminate age. The ring is solid cast, oval in plan (68.9mm x 62.0mm) and teardrop-shaped in section with a rounder interna edge and a more pronounced external edge (ring width c.7.7mm wide x 4.2mm thick). A rolled and folded lead sheet of uncertain dating, probably Roman to Modern (AD 43-1950). The object is roughly tubular in form but appears to have been an irregular shape prior to folding. The object is filled by lead carbonates and soil, and one corner has been folded over a segment of 0.5mm diameter copper alloy wire, with unidentified fibres present in some of the lead carbonate and soil fill. The outer surface of the object has tool marks- parallel lines likely representing the jaws of some pliers or tongs as well as some impressions that appear to be from twisted wire. The obj…

The object is 3.4mm thick in the centre and unevenly dished along the circumference reaching a maximum height of 22.3mm A similar object is recorded on the PAS database (NMGW-36A04D) although the present object does not have obvious hammer reticulation marks on the surface and was recovered as a single isolated find, rather than with a ‘lid’ as seen in NMGW-36A04D. Lead objects are difficult to date due to their lack of diagnostic features. A lead…

A near-complete cast tin alloy bead of unknown date. The bead is roughly circular in plan and sub-oval in section with external diameter of 13.6 and 8.5mm thick. The central perforation is warped but the side with less warpage has an internal diameter of 5.8mm x 3.9mm. The bead lacks diagnostic characteristics so a definite date cannot be obtained, however two tin beads are recorded from Medieval (15th century) contexts and examples are described by Egan and Pritchard (2002: 315-316 no. 1584, 1585). The metal is a medium grey and shiny in places with a weight of 4.17g. References…

Two fragments of Pewter or copper alloy- one possible vessel rim. Little diagnostic but maybe a medieval or post medieval vessel. A fragment 46.4mm long, 19.8mmwide and a maximum of 1.5mm thick, weighs 5.07g. The fragment has a channel beaten in lengthways with flanking ridges. One long edge is thinner that the other- 0.9mm vs 1.3mm. Possible vessel rim, but every edge is a break, and no other diagnostic features. Form of the sheet gives little indication as to shape due to distortion. A fragment 33mm long, 19.1mm wide, maximum 2.7mm thick, weighs 6.42g. Every edge is a b…

The top edge and one of the side edges appear to be moderately rounded and are likely to be unmodified, while the other two edges are irregular and probably trimmed to the desired shape.
