The front of the object is decorated in a stamped armorial decoration of the royal shield with traces of the legend [HONI SOIT] QUI MAL [Y PEN]SE which translates to ‘May he be shamed who thinks badly of it’. This was the motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter (founded in AD 1438). Much of the surface has been lost to old damage and erosion, but the detail was clearly fine and traces of black enamel preserve in th…

An incomplete cast lead Post Medieval decorative mount of probable 17th century date. The object is sub-circular in plan with iron corrosion product on two sides indicating it is probably perforated by a small iron rod, which suggests it may be related to a structure/building. The face is decorated with a central raised concentric moulding c.11.8mm in diameter and 8 spokes radiating from it to a raised outer border. Single raised pellets are between each of the spokes. The mount is likely to be an external decorative fitting e.g. for pipework or a window. The object measures 29.0 in d…

A small projection crowns the top of the bar mount 2.2mm wide x 1.3mm tall. Much of the original surface is lost, so any surface treatments or decorations are indiscernible. The reverse is plain, flat and undecorated with two round sectioned attachment spikes (overall depth of 3.9mm). The surface is damaged by corrosion product resulting in a mottled green and reddish brown colour. The object has an overall length of 23.8mm, max width of 8mm…

Fragment of silver decorative mount, broken top and bottom. The outline has the superficial resemblance to spoon handle terminals, but the figurative decoration is the wrong way round, and the cast is hollow on the reverse and clearly intended to sit against a flat surface. The mount has a tapering form, widest the base of the main motif. This has the form of a crowned reliquary bust of a female saint with long hair, facing forward. The background is filled with asymmetrical vegetal scrolls, against a rusticated surface. Below the bust is a smaller triangular panel filled with what…
