Description & identification The reported object is a decorative gold posy ring. The ring consists of a thin gold band, D-shaped in section, with a tightly set repeating pattern of tooled S-shaped indentations on the external surface, possibly for enamel, although none appears to have survived. The internal surface in engraved with an inscription which reads ‘Though absent yet constant’ in italic letters in sentence case. A complete Post Medieval copper alloy posy ring dating from c. 1600 to 1700 AD. The hoop is broadly circular in plan (it is slightly bent out of shape) and is shallow D-shaped in cross-section. There is a central vertical seam which stands proud of the rings surface. The inner face of the hoop is inscribed with the text: I LIVE IN LOVE, in Roman uppercase lettering. The terminal of the letter I splits into two curving serifs. There is no maker’s mark. The ring has corrosion to its surface rendering it a dark reddish brown colour. There are no visible remains of silvering or gilding.

A complete pierced Post Medieval copper alloy Taunton farthing trade token, dated 1667. Obverse description: A capital letter T under a tun/cask, two roses flanking the base of the T. Obverse inscription: A • TAVNTON • FARTHING Reverse description: Taunton castle. Reverse inscription: BY • THE • CONSTABLES • 1667 • A hole measuring 2.5mm in diameter is punched through from the reverse (castle side) to the obverse. The token is a shiny brassy colour (caused by the coastal mud) and has a worn and pitted surface.

A complete Post Medieval cast copper alloy weight, dating from c. 1500 AD to 1800 AD. The coin weight is disk shaped with two flat faces. One face has been stamped X X at the centre. Above this is a stamped letter D. Below the initials is another unclear oval shaped stamp. On the other face X X is again stamped, due to corrosion it is not clear if the other stamps are also repeated. The weight is dark grey-brown in colour with small areas of green corrosion. Some of the original surface is lost to corrosion.

An incomplete copper alloy and white metal probable button of Post Medieval date (c. AD 1700-1800). The button is circular in plan, with a central 14.8mm diameter domed boss in the centre, with a flat circular rim 1.1mm thick. The reverse of the button is undecorated and flat with a mass of probable solder in the hollow of the boss. A complete silver-gilt posy ring of 17th or early 18th century date. The ring is heavy D-shaped sectioned hoop with a plain outer surface. The 2.5mm thick hoop is solid silver and was originally gilded. The gilding has largely worn off, particularly on the outer surface. The band shows a transverse line likely indicating that the hoop was created by bending a strip of silver and joining the ends with silver solder. A near-complete cast lead cloth seal of Elizabeth I (c. AD 1558-1603). The seal is made of two sub-circular discs (diameter 24.4mm, 4.6mm thick) joined at one end by a folded strip. One side bears the relief of the coat of arms for Elizabeth I with E R separated by a crown above and 6 beside. The other side is illegible and smashed into the reverse of the other disc. The object is a pale buff and weighs 11.45g.

A complete pair of mathematical or surveyors’ dividers dating to the Post Medieval period, likely 17th-18th centuries. The globular 12.1mm wide, 11.9mm deep head of the dividers forms the hinge fulcrum, below the head the trapezoidal sectioned arms descend 20mm before they curve out and back down to form a circular aperture in the dividers.
