The spring has broken before the first coil, but it is likely that the spring would have coiled twice either side of the head and would have had an internal chord. The bow has a maximum width at the head of 4.40mm with straight sides, which converge towards the pointed foot. The bow is of D-shaped section with a maximum thickness of 3.46 near the head. The upper bow is decorated with a series of oblique incis…

Curator's Report Description of object Rein-ring or harness ring (Found in association with Terret (NMGW-9B2D52) This is a substantial cast bronze ring with a circular cross-section. At one point, there is a slight casting imperfection, visible as a slight pitted thinning with a slightly bulbous or raised margin. This would not have compromised the structural strength of the piece. Slight thinning and smoothing of the internal surface on one side of the ring may represent a slight wear facet, created through pressure from straps or a bit-link. On one upper surface, there is a…

The cast bronze terret is incomplete and is slightly distorted, missing decoration at the apex, above the broken arms (as initially reported). The bar is of low oval section and the oval stops are enhanced with a central groove, worn on the interior. The hoop is of faceted tear-shaped section near the stops and thins to a D-shaped section at the apex. The top of the hoop has integral arms, which have both broken near the centre and it is was unclear whether the arms defined a sub-triangular shape or met and diverged again to define two opposing C arms. Part of small catch-plate survives. Surviving length 36mm, surviving maximum width 6.5mm, weight 1.5 grams. The simple form of the flat bow and small catch-plate suggest that this was probably part of a Strip Bow brooch. The entire surface of the strap-union is quite corroded and pitted. Although the figure-of-eight form flanked by two vertical bars fits into Taylor and Brailsford?s Type 1 strap union category, the use of the S-scroll motif is only paralleled on the larger and more elaborate examples from Seven Sisters and Chepstow. These are classified as Type 2 and date to the…
