A complete enamelled copper alloy harness fitting (toggle or cheek-piece) of late Iron Age to early Roman date, broadly 1st century AD, but probably more specifically to around the Roman campaigning period in Wales (47-78AD), broadly c. 60-80AD (Davis and Gwilt 2008, pg.164). The toggle is complete with the exception of minor damage to its terminals and enamel inlays. The toggle has a length of 117.2mm comprising a central perforated section tapering at each end into two circular sectioned arms, which in turn expand to the circular sectioned flat-ended terminals. The central section i…

Iron Age copper alloy terret of Group I, Simple Type and probably of 2nd century BC to mid 1st century AD date The cast terret is near-complete but is distorted, corroded and worn (with a distorted length of 36.4mm, a distorted width of 42.2mm and a weight of 15.2g). The terret hoop is narrowest at its apex, now exaggerated by corrosion and of circular or oval section (with a diameter of 3.3mm). On the areas of the interior where the surface survives wear facets are evident. The hoop widens towards the terminals (8.7mm and 9.3mm high by 9.5and 8.5mm wide, likely to have been oval…

Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Iron Age enamelled copper alloy stud or decorative mount, probably of mid to late 1st century AD date The cast mount is of sub-circular, D-shaped form and is incomplete, possibly cut-down in antiquity (with a depth of 9.1mm, a diameter of 35.1mm and a weight of 21.2g). The rear of the object had a central rounded projection, gradually widening towards the base. The edge of the rear is raised with a rim (1mm wide, 1.8mm - 2.0mm high and 4.4mm deep). The front of the mount is near-flat with recessed cells to hold enamel. Along the edge are two 'trumpet' cells flanking the rounde…

Iron Age copper alloy terret fragment of indeterminate type and probably of 2nd century BC to 1st century AD date The cast fragmentary terret is heavily-corroded and represented by the incomplete bar, terminal and basal part of the hoop or ring (with a surviving length of 40.9mm and a weight of 12.7g). The bar is of sub-rectangular to oval section and now expands towards the terminal (with a width of 5.6mm - 8.5mm and thickness of 3.8mm - 6.5mm). The corroded terminals were expanded and of oval section (10.9mm x 9.4mm), there is the suggestion that the collar may have been enhanced wit…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Iron Age copper alloy circular openwork mount, probably of 1st century AD date The mount is fragmentary, represented by a little under half and was circular (with a diameter of 45.9mm, a surviving width of 25.7mm, a thickness of 2.7mm and a weight of 6.2g). The mount has broken across a diameter, with a possible tear at the centre. The openwork decoration appears to have been of 'whirligig' form arranged around a triskele and incorporating pelta and sub-triangular apertures, with two concave sides and a convex side against the outer frame. The design was enhanced with groove…

Late Iron Age cast copper alloy decorative composite sword fitting, probably a scabbard chape or possibly a pommel and of 1st century AD date The mount is of symmetrical anthropomorphic form and is near-complete, containing the fragmentary remains of the end of the iron sword (with a length 39.8mm, a maximum thickness along the finials of 11.1mm and a weight of 38.5g). It seems probable that the mount is a scabbard chape (see discussion below) decorated with two opposing human heads of similar style but when attached to a scabbard would be seen with the heads inverted but is here…

Iron Age enamelled copper alloy harness fitting (toggle or cheek-piece), probably of 1st century AD date The toggle is near-complete, with slight peripheral damage and some surface loss (with an overall length of 115.9mm and a weight of 100.7g). The circular disc terminals are expanded (with a diameter of 15.7mm and a thickness of 4.5mm). The side of the terminal is enhanced with a central rib (1.5mm wide) and there is no enamelled inlay on the terminals. The arms are of circular section and concave across their length, expanding to the terminal and to the mid-section (with a minimum d…

Cast copper alloy miniature-terret, probably dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. The terret has a 'D' shaped profile with a length of 19.6mm and width of 21.7mm. The terret is of sub-rectangular section and has a minimum thickness at the bar of 2.0mm and a maximum thickness of 3.8mm on the hoop. The hoop is of irregular width and varies from 3.2mm to 6.7mm; it is unclear whether this variation is because of wear or an irregular casting. The bar is 9mm long and is 3.9 mm to 4.5 mm in width. The stops are simply defined by a thickening of the hoop. There is a clear wea…

Late Iron Age or Early Roman cast copper alloy cosmetic pestle. The pestle is end-looped, with a now incomplete circular suspension loop, but originally with a continuous loop.
