Copper alloy brooch. Cast umbonate plate brooch, as kindly identified by the finder who cites SWYOR-530E36 as a parallel; Mackreth type British Plate 7.a. A central projecting boss is surrounded by four symmetrically disposed oval cells which may retain enamel – if so of a probably blue tint - and are confined by a border. The boss is surrounded by a deep gutter. Outside this, a further border confines a series of eleven semi-circular cells, each apparently retaining a triangular plate of dull possibly blue enamel – it does not ‘flow’ to fill the available cells…

Copper alloy brooch fragment. Probably the lower bow from a large headstud brooch, Mackreth type Headstud 3.a or 5.a (depending on whether the lost pin was sprung or hinged). The mid to lower bow bears about eight rectangular cells apt to receive enamel, though no trace of colorant appears. The bow tapers gently to a drum-shaped pedestal foot with an annulus in its base. The tattered stub of a large unpierced catch plate projects from behind the lower bow. Fiercely abraded. Suggested date: Early Roman, 75-125 Length: 40.5mm, Width: 8.6mm, Thickness (at top of fragment): 3.3mm, Weight:…

Copper alloy brooch fragment. The lower part of the bow of a great square-headed brooch, in two joining fragments extending from below a putative mid-bow moulding [lost]. The uppermost part bears opposed sub-triangular lappets occupied by Salin style I decoration with a rectangular panel between them. Copper alloy brooch fragment. The lower part of a cruciform brooch, from below the mid-bow, which is evidenced by the turned-up end of this fragment.  Below this, incised paired lines limit a plain field with a triple moulded collar below it. This in turn gives way to a possibly human mask with brows and a basal pair of slightly expanded nostrils. It is possible that human and equine masks were combined at this terminal. The stub of an integrally cast catch plate remains behind the upper part of the fragment. The back of the object is slightly concave below the catch plate. The su…

Copper alloy brooch fragment. Dragonesque brooch, Mackreth type DRAG 3b. A comma shaped casting tapered to either end with two rows of triangular enamel-filled cells of a dull red and a [now] pale green tint, alternating tints being accompanied by alternating orientation of the triangles. Suggested date: Early Roman, 100-150 – which is based as much on the assumption of a 2nd-century date for polychrome enamel as on the detail of decoration, which is not precisely paralleled by Mackreth (2011).
