Broad period: ROMAN
County: Northumberland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A roughly squared piece of jet or similar black geological material, probably dating to the Roman period, c. AD 122-410.
The 'jet' is sub-cuboid, missing one corner. The upper and lower faces are natural in appearance, having become removed from a larger piece by the natural cleaving of the rock, but two side faces are squared, suggesting that these were cut/shaped.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cumbria

A sub-triangular shaped portion of a window pane made from flattened cow horn.
The object forms a rough right triangle. The long side of the triangle is 93mm in length. The next side is perpendicular and measures 69mm in length. A short length (21mm) turns purpendicular toward the hypotenuse. The hypotenuse is 110mm in length. None of the sides are perfectly straight. Toolmarks attest that the two 'legs' of the triangle - the sides perpendicular to each other - were cut, whereas the hypotenuse was formed as a result of the material breaking.
Striations natural to the horn a…

A silver huntsman's whistle of 16th century date. The whistle has been cut from silver sheet, rolled and soldered together. The whistle has three distinct elements: the mouthpiece, the body, and the open end. These are separated by discoidal collars soldered on to the body. These collars were made by a length of silver wire through smaller silver wire hoops. clearly visible due to damage in one section of the collar near the open end. The mouthpiece is incomplete, having lost most of its silver tubing in antiquity. The body is decorated with a rose/flower circumscribed by a square wit…

This site attributes the style to the medieval period, however the metalwork and production appear to be consistent with a post-medieval style.

A cast lead weight of the late Medieval or Post-Medieval period.
The weight is trapezoidal in profile, with 7 facetted faces from base to top. The top has a solid glob of lead that appears to be an incomplete suspension loop. The glob has a narrow rectangular perforation through it, but there is little space for a hook or another form of suspension. The body of the weight also has circular holes drilled into it.
The base is rather elaborate, with 7 drop-shaped wedges radiating from the centre.
