An incomplete copper alloy enamelled zoomorphic Roman plate brooch in the form of a hare or hound, dating to c.AD 100-300. See Mackreth (2011) OBJECT 3.c Plate 125.
The brooch takes the form of a running hound or hare with a projected square-nosed snout, long ears swept back, and stretched forward front leg. The elongated legs may indicate it is a hound rather than a hare. The back half of the animal is missing. The head presents an eye in the form of a recessed circular cell that is filled with some white enamel. The body is also recessed to contain enamel and presents a ci…

The head of the brooch is much reduced from the original trumpet design, having two relatively small arms, on the back of which the intact pin is attached. Based on the two drawings referenced in Hattat's guides, there may once have a circular fixture at top of the head, but this now missing.
The relativ…

A cast copper-alloy Romano-British Headstud Brooch with a large chain loop at the hinge end. The brooch is similar to Hattatt ex. 35-37 (1982, pg. 77), which have approximate second century (AD 100-200) date.
No enamel or other non-metallic materials remain, and the spring and pin are no longer present. A small recess at the greatest curve of the bow indicates the former placement of a decorative stud. The bow itself hosts two raised ridges, which proceed from the underside of the head along the spline of the bow before terminating at the other end. The axis bar undulates in a se…

A cast copper-alloy Romano-british trumpet brooch, the midpoint of the bow decorated with three flanges, interspersed with two series of projecting, dull spines, arranged in an encircling radial pattern around the core of the bow. Hattatt's suggested dating for examples similar to this (1982, pg 107, ex. 80) is of the first half of the second century (AD 100-150). The hinge and substantial amounts of the catchplate survive, but the pin is lost. Iron oxide staining at the head end indicates the former presence of an iron pin.
