An incomplete copper alloy enamelled zoomorphic Roman plate brooch in the form of a hare or hound, dating to c.AD 100-300. See Mackreth (2011) OBJECT 3.c Plate 125. The brooch takes the form of a running hound or hare with a projected square-nosed snout, long ears swept back, and stretched forward front leg. The elongated legs may indicate it is a hound rather than a hare. The back half of the animal is missing. Cast copper alloy miniature object in the form of dagger or sword and possibly dating to the Roman period (c.AD 43-410) but may date in the medieval period. Th object has a flattened tapering blade that is worn and abraded at the edges giving an asymmetric shape. Towards the top of the blade is an off-centre circular perforation with a diameter of 3.1mm. Complete cast copper alloy Roman 'vulvate' or 'coffee bean' mount, dating to c.AD 150-300. The mount is broadly rectancular with tapering long sides. The arched section is raised to a oval motif with an indented line at its centre. The reverse side has two integral studs, approx. 5mm long, for attaching the mount. The object has a green patina. Mounts of this form are thought to have decorated horse-harnesses and possibly used genitalia-inspired imagery to invoke apotropaic powers.
