Treasure Case 2021 T980 Description: An incomplete silver ingot dating to the early medieval period (c.AD 850-1100). The object is sub-rectangular in plan (‘cigar’) with a roughly circular or sub-triangular section. One terminal end has a rounded edge whilst the other is cut/broken. The surface is covered in what appears to be hammer marks or wear, and a number of small cuts or nicks may be present on the object. The object consists of a solid sub-triangular foot from which protrudes an elongated semi-cylindrical socket that is C-shaped in section. The socket has a moulded zoomorphic decoration that consists of raised bulbous eyes at the top of the head that look down on snub-nosed socketed. An incomplete copper alloy knob from an Early Medieval Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch, dating to c.AD 420-570. Its shape means it may be from the top or side of a cruciform brooch attached to a rectangular head. The knob has a pointed head flaring into a flat top, a small waist which then flares out into a circular foot, then with a base to attach to the pin bar. There is evidence of the pin arrangement at the back. The pin was likely made of iron indicated by the iron corrosion around the pin arrangement.
