An incomplete whetstone, dating to the early Medieval to Medieval period (c.AD 700-1400). The object is broadly triangular in plan tapering in width from the sub-oval pierced end to a rounded point. The wider end or top of the object is pierced with a circular perforation measuring 5mm in diameter. This appears to have been drilled from each face. It is likely that this hone would have been suspended around the neck by means of the hole at one terminal. A fragment of the stone has broken away in recent times at the holed terminal end. Thin horizontal striations or scratches are vis…

Small cast lead Viking weight which is rectangular in plan. The upper surface has been decorated with a thin plate of copper alloy moulding which has a bright green patina. There is moulding on the top of the copper plate which has been gilded, the remains of which can be seen in the grooves of the decoration. The design is of two spirals with an indistinct moulded animal head where the two circles meet. It is likely to be Hiberno-Scandinavian and can be dated to the late 8th/early 9th century.

A small cast lead weight containing a copper-alloy Styca, of Aethelred II, (c.840-858AD). The reverse of the coin reads EDILRED REX, placing it in Pirie's Phase C which can be either first or second reign. Due to the good condition of the coin it is likely that it was not very old when pressed into the lead. It probably dates from the mid-late 9th century. Similar examples of coins embedded in weights on the database are LIN-3DFD27 YORYM-8054B2. Similar examples can be found on p19, Biggs and Withers, (2000).

A complete polyhedral lead weight, probably dating to the early medieval period (c.AD 850-950). The weight has eight unequal sides with each face presenting incised lines of inconsistent directions. One face appears to have a square in the centre. The edges are rounded which may be due to abrasion from the sea (found on coastland). The object has a smooth dark grey patina. Dimensions: Length 11.6mm; width 11.23mm; weight 9.7g Similar polyhedral weights have been discovered at the Viking camp/settlement at Torksey, see DENO-C08136; DENO-C075A3; DENO-C065B4 andDENO-9458A3 …

Fragment of pottery. It has a dark grey, reduced fabric with a sandy temper and looks hand-made. It is sub-rectangular measuring 43mm x 27mm. It has some sort of light red material on surface, perhaps as decoration. Kevin Leahy saw a photograph of this and said it looked to be Early Medieval but it does 'lack the usual sparkly inclusions' and it is harder to judge from a photograph.

Parts of an Anglo-Saxon sheet metal bowl made of copper alloy known as an eared cauldron, a Gotland cauldron or a Gotlandkessel. The bowl itself is intact from the rim until about half way down. The rim diameter is 196mm and the bowl is c.160mm deep. The handle is in two pieces and is made from iron. It measures 195mm in length, and most of it survives. Most of the base is missing and the edges are very uneven where it has broken. There are c.10 other fragments of the base. It has a globular body (shown by the small part of the base still present) with an everted rim. There is a singl…

Eighth-century Irish vessel mount. The copper-alloy mount is dominated by a grim human face with large oval eyes, above panels of enamel. It was originally symmetrical, with a matching face in mirror image at the bottom. It would have been made as one of a set of three rim-mounts for a bowl of thin copper-alloy sheet. these mounts were recessed behind to hold rings from which the bowl could be hung. The Arnside mount has three holes drilled through it, including a large one through the mouth, showing that the mount has been re-attached or re-used. The stylised staring face and the …
