SALVS reverse type depicting Salus seated left, feeding a snake coiled around altar from a patera in right hand, left arm resting on side of chair. Mint of Rome. RIC III, p. 442, no. 672b. BMC IV (p. cliv) suggests that this issue with the obverse legend CRISPINA AVG IMP COMMODI AVG could have been struck early, in Marcus Aurelius' reign, c. AD 178-80. Crispina’s coinage was traditionally dated to c. AD 178-182, but more recent research suggests that she was probably not…

Early Roman copper alloy denarius of Commodus dating from c. AD192. RIC 3 (Commodus), 237. A metallurgical analysis would be useful to see if there is any silver present. If it is entirely of base metal, then its purpose will certainly have been votive. A number of similar examples from the Maryport area were recorded (in the Netherhall collection; not the PAS database), though they have since disappeared.

Silver Roman denarius of Crispina dating to c. AD 178-88 (Reece Period 9), VENVS, Venus standing left holding apple and gathering drapery on left shoulder. Mint of Rome. RIC III, p. 399, no. 286a. Crispina’s coinage was traditionally dated to c. AD 178-182, but more recent research suggests that she was probably not exiled to Capri until c. AD 188. Therefore, we date her coins to c. AD 178-188; although some coins probably date to AD 178-80, we cannot be sure which they are so all Crispina’s coins are assigned to Reece Period 9 (AD 180-192).
