A copper alloy mount. It is basically triangular in shape, the narrow end being truncated, while the opposite face and the two sides are fluted. One side shows evidence of a slightly raised border along the edge. The mount has three studs on the rear along the long edge, which are bulbous at the ends, and may have been peened over to fit something. On the other face is a design which seems to have been quite crudely etched into it. Two rectangular frames parallel to the short edge are decorated with cross hatch with a plain rectangle between them. There are then curved panels with…

A fragment of a copper alloy mount. It has probably been a longer, rectangular piece and it has a raised border at top and bottom. There is an elaborate vegetative pattern apparant. The mount may have been gilded at some point. It is difficult to assign a date to the artefact as not many diagnostic features remain Dimensions: 16mm long and 13mm wide, it weighs 1.74g

A copper alloy harness mount or similar in the shape of a six petalled flower. The petals are formed of equal segments of a circle, domed across their width, and curved on the outside edge. The petals are hollow on the reverse. There is no centre to the flower. The central, pointed stud at the rear is folded over where it has been fitted. Examples on the database are assigned wide date ranges, but the form of this piece most closely resembles DOR-81D15B, which is dated from Egan and Pritchard's (2002, 191, no.1015) example to 1350-1450.  Dimensions: 19mm d…

A probable lead alloy mount, roughly circular in shape. On the front of the mount is a face, possibly that of a cherub or putee, the facial features are clearly defined. Around the face is a pattern of circles and lines which radiate from the face, and may represent hair. On the forehead is a sub circular object which is unclear. The back is plain and slightly hollow with a raised rim. It has a brown patina, lighter in the hollows. A very similar example, which also lacks fixings is HESH-E41ACC, which is dated to AD 1600-1800 Dimensions: 26mm wide and long, and weighs 13.92mm

A frgament of a probable copper alloy mount. It is rectangular with two 'prongs' extending from one of the short sides. These are both broken and are of uneven lengths. Where they join the main body. there is a line moulded parallel to the short side, with a recess either side of this, as a decoration.  Other than that the fragment is too worn to identify any further patterning. On the rear near the short side which opposes the prongs is the remians of a circular fixing, possibly a rivet. The lack of diagnostic pattering prevents a closer date being all…

A copper alloy mount. It is an irregular triangular shape with a blunt v shape cut out in the top which forms two arms at the top of the piece, one of which is pointed and one blunted. In the centre is a circular boss with a raised framed around it. In this are three (visible) flower like decorations, with a trace of what may be red enamel inbetween them. It has been gilded, some remains. There is no obvious method of fixing. It seems late Victorian/early Edwardian in style Dimensions: 136mm long and 60mm wide, it weighs 78.85g

A copper alloy mount. It is an elongated triangle in shape, the top is a narrow bar with knops at either end, extending beyond the body. The shape then curves out inot a sub-oval shape, then into a waist below which a smaller diameter sub-circular shape emerges. This is finished with a pointed protruberance. This may be part of the decoration, but may equally have been designed to fold back to hold the mount in place. At the back, in the centre of the top bar is a similar shape which is bent back. It has a design, perhaps of foliage, cast into te face, the rear is plain. The whole…

A copper alloy cast chip carved mount, probably of early medieval origin. It is circular, with a circular border around the outside face. Within this is a design which comprises of representations of possibly four, intertwined animal hybrids. The bodies of the animals are formed of three contoured lines, interlaced in a square in the centre of the field. At one end of the sinuous bodies, towards the outside of the field, is what may be a head, formed of a curve with each end curled, and an eye underneath with further contoured lines defining the face. No decoration is apparant, although there are traces of what may have been paint or gilding, the former being more likely as it is also found on the fixing pegs. The whole has a light green patina. A copper alloy bucket mount, in the form of a bulls head. The mount is moulded as one piece and starts with a fixing at the top, a circular fixing with a central hole for the handle of the bucket to attach to. The inside diameter of this is approximately 6mm. Under this is the bulls head. Firstly there is a pair of curved horns, each terminating in a knop, which curve away from the plane along which the bucket would sit, perhaps 20mm high, producing a very 3D effect. Between the horns is a ferrous deposit. The head of the bull is wide and hemispherical in cross section (being…

An incomplete copper alloy cross. This is three of the four arms of a copper alloy cross, which has been gilded. The arms extend from a diamond shaped centre, widening into a 'bulge' then narrowing again and ending in another widened knop. They are hemispherical in section, slightly flatter on the back. In the centre of the diamond is a small, round blue cabochon gem or glass piece, set proud of the centrepiece in a raised mount. There are rays (perhaps representing those from a halo) cast in to the metal emitting from this gem. One section is slightly shorter th…

Probable late Post Medieval to early Modern silver pyramidal mount set with an amber coloured glass or stone. Possibly from something like a jewellery or knick knack box as the base is flat. The mount is hollow (only 0.8g including the glass/stone) which suggests a Victorian Gothic Revival or Arts and Crafts Movement object. Suggested date range c1840 to c1920 AD, but possibly later. Length 9mm, width 6mm, height 7mm, weight 0.8mm.

A complete gilded copper alloy mount with a rock crystal The basic mount is rectangular in shape. It has a border formed in to the metal which gives the appearance of beading or 'pie crust'. The face of the mount is raised into what would be a pyramid but is truncated. The whole is gilded. Into this raised face is set a rock crystal, which is is an irregular ovoid in shape, wider at one end than the other. The rear of the mount is also formed into a pyramidal shape, and on it there is what appears to be the remains of a flap of material, perhaps part of the original …

A circular mount, probably of the Roman period. It is made from copper alloy, and curves into a hemispherical dome, at the rear of which is the remains of a stud by which it was fixed. It is decorated on the face with concentric circles around a central raised circle. Although there is no discernable trace of enamel, it is likely that some of the inscribed circles had millefiori enamel inlaid, as this is a feature of these objects, and there is evidence of some highly corroded material. The finder notes that it is similar to one found at the Roman bath house excavation in Car…

Early Medieval copper alloy probable mount or possible button. It is square in plan, and 'T' shaped in section and profile. The inner face is undecorated with a roughly central projecting shank. The tip of the shank may be lost and could once have had a perforation. The outer face is decorated with a single central square flanked on each corner with L-shaped cells. This decorative motif can be closely paralleled in Wales with two examples of lead alloy weights with copper alloy insets from Anglesey, one of which was found on the Early Medieval enclosed settlement near Llanbedrg…
