An almost complete copper alloy brooch of headstud type. The bow has a moulded stud on the curve at the top. The short wings extend either side of the head, and above these the plate on which the missing spring and pin would have mounted is present, decorated with three horizontal lines. The bow ends with a circular foot. The catch plate is present but incomplete. The cylindrical mount for the spring is still on the reverse but is incomplete. It has an even bronze coloured patina with no corrosion, which is attributable to it having been found in sand. Parallels for…

An enamelled copper alloy plate brooch. It is circular, a raised border on the outer circumference and approximately halfway along the diameter forms a section, inside which cells for enamel are formed by alternate high and low sections. On the raised parts there are traces of a blue enamel. The central section of the brooch would have been divided into six triangular sections, like wheel spokes, which would have also have been enamelled. Three of these remain. In the centre is a raised boss which would have been a prominent feature, but is now missing. The reverse is fl…

A section of what is probably a knee or trumpet type early Roman brooch. The head is circular and behind it are the remains of the fixing plate for the spring. This is a raised rectangular section which fills the full diameter of the head and would have extended perhaps 3mm or 4mm upright. The remains of this have a worn curve in the centre which would have formed a fixing hole when complete. From the front of this head a circular section piece extends which has a central rib down the length of it. This curves at approximately 75 degrees, sloping down from the head, then vert…

A copper alloy and enamel lozengeiform brooch of the Roman period, 1st to 2nd centuries AD. It is diamond shaped, with the longer axis being horizontal. In the centre is a number of cells which form first another rhomboid, which is inlaid with blue enamel (intact) and inside this are four smaller diameter circles. The outer circles are inlaid with white enamel, which survives, the inner circles do not have enamel in them, and may alternatively have contained gem stones, it is not possible to confirm this. The outer frame is again a lozenge shaped, div…

A dragonesque brooch of the early Roman period complete apart from the pin and well preserved. It is moulded as one piece in copper alloy, an extended S shape which is formed of two symmetrical arms. Bars form the terminals and in the centre each arm widens slightly and is joined by a central section slightly thinner in diameter. From this centre are two curved features, one one each arm, extending part of the way along the arm. The bars and this central section are decorated with a beaded effect, with a linear edge either side of this. The rear is flat and hollow in the…

A copper alloy fragment, folded and distorted. The top part of it has parallel lines running over a curved section, in a manner which resembles a Roman bow brooch, of Hod Hill type. The point where this is folded into the body of the piece can be seen on one side, on the reverse this join is not apparent and the curved section has thus been formed as part of the body. The lower part of it has no real form and no decoration, but has small, circular plate on one side which is riveted to the piece with a copper alloy rivet - this can be seen on the reverse. This suggests that it…

An incomplete copper-alloy P shaped brooch of the Roman period. The mechanism is held in a half-tube which is ridged around the circumference. Probable fragment of a Roman brooch. The main curve is broad, the thinner end has mounded in features of circular decoration. It is broken and worn so it is dfficult to discern any details but the remaining form is suggestive of a dolphin type, maybe of Polden Hill variant (Hattatt Figure157 and 160) with a heavy head arising form the spring bar, thinning towards the end with the hook. A fragment of a copper alloy brooch. It is comprised of two distinctive elements. A traingular section forms the largest part, and in a square moulded in recess are cells formed by three dimaond shapes. A series of horizontal ribs then finishes the bottom of this across the narrow section. There is then a diamond shaped section at the bottom, point downwards, with a circular cell in the centre of this. It is likey that these cells would have contained enamel. The larger triangular section is flat and has a central vertical rib moulded in on the reverse, the diamond shape…

An unusual copper alloy brooch which has been modified with the addition of a silver collar. The shape of the original head of the brooch is obscured by the silver collar but is probably square with a rounded knop on top. From a raised, horizontal style line under this the main body of the brooch extends, widening in a narrow fan shape. There is a suggestion of fine decoration on the fan, perhaps a gilded pattern or even cells which may have contained enamelling. Sally Worrell comments that the decoration also shows signs of a foliate motif, as seen on Mackreth 2011, trumpet deriv…

The brooch is circular although the frame is now distorted into a sub-oval shape. It is formed of silver wire wrapped around a central silver wire frame, in very detailed and elaborate form which creates a box shaped profile. Some three quarters of this wrapped wire decoration remains, the rest of the frame consists only of the central wire. The pin is intact although no longer closes because of the distortion to the brooch, is it an elongated triangular shape and is attached by wrapping around the frame: at this point the frame is not…

A gilded copper alloy brooch or possibly a mount. A sub square centre section with four knops projecting from each of the corners via a short triangular stem. The central cast design is set in a circular dished depression, and consists of a many petalled (ten) flower with a futher flower motif in the centre of this, set above the larger flower. The raised border of the dished area is decorated with small pellets. The design is reminiscent of a Tudor rose. There is no apparant decoration on the knops.
