A lead alloy weight. It is shaped like an elongated sphere. The neck is long and flat, sub regtanular in shape. In the centre, near the tip is a suspension hole. The base is flat in the centre and would therefore stand. Weights like these are seen in the Roman (for example SUSS-EA2CCC) and Medieval (NLM-5D1F37) periods. The weight of 192g does not accord with the Roman weight system, as 1 semis is equvilent to 164.5g. It is closer to the Troy system, where 1/2 lb would be 186.5g, this was probably in use from the late 14th century, only being sta…

A cast copper alloy crucifix. The cross has rounded ends to the arms with a slight collar near each termination. The three dimensional figure of Christ is clearly defined, dressed in a lioncloth and with a halo. The arms are held near horizontally, and details of the hands can be seen, as can the ribs. His head hangs to his right hand side. The back of the cross is plain and rounded, rather than flat, and there is no evidence of a fixing or loop to hang it from. Above the head of Christ is a banner with the letters INRI, which stands for&nb…

A cross shaped lead alloy moulding of uncertain purpose. The tapering long arm ends in a blunt point and is slightly bent halfway down, damage rather than intentional. The other end of this is terminated with a moulded in, overhanging circluar shape, wider than the arms and bent over in places around its circumference. The two short arms emanate from a point about 1/4 of the way down the long arm. These are circular in section (as is the long arm) but splay out slightly towards the blunt ends.

An incomplete tripod cauldron of the Medieval period. It is rounded, with a wide rim. The three legs are present, one does not appear to match and this may be the result of a later repair. One of the legs (it is not clear if this is the mismatched one) is now detached. The two handles are triangular, mounted under the rim. A lot of the body of the cauldron is missing, although the weight of what remains is still substantial. Nevertheless it holds its shape and is an exceptional find as these would mostly have been recycled when too damaged to use further in the peri…

A degraded copper alloy strap end, that may have been silver plated but this has largely been lost. It is a long, thin triangular shape, half of the top is broken away and there is some missing. There are the remains of a pattern on one face, it is too worn to discern but may include a fleur de lys and dots. If so this would place it in the medieval period

Late Medieval to early Post Medieval lead alloy shield shaped pan weight. Equates to 60 drams or 3.7 ounces (almost 4 ounces or quarter a pound) under the ‘binary’ averdepois system. The decorated side consists of a crowned fleur-de-lis, surrounded by a recessed border approximately 5mm lower than the decorated area. The border is largely absent from the top edge of the weight. The weight is lightly abraded and the decoration is still clearly visible. Dates to between c1390 and c1588 AD.

A copper alloy purse bar and chain. The bar is made of metal folded over, probably to hold the fabric of the purse. It is semi circular in section. At one end is an eylet through which the chain, which is detached but fits, would have been held. The chain consists of 9 rings, 8 are complete, one is broken and part of it is missing. Part of a lead alloy spindle whorl with an unusual design. It is a shallow biconical whorl, with a moulded border around the circumference and inner diameter. On one side is a knot design formed of intertwined lines. On the other side is a design made up of various symbols, including groups of three dots, radiating lines and what may be two intertwined letter F's, and, unusually, a heart motif. The image on the right hand side gives a better view of these symbols. Approximately 60% of the whorl survives. The diameter of the central hole is 10mm which would sugge…
