Object type: ADZE HAMMER
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint Mesolithic tranchet axe or Neolithic flaked adze. It is trapezoidal in shape, expanding slightly towards the damaged end and roughly triangular in cross-section with a raised ridge running longitudinally down the centre of one face. There is a rough break across one end where a section is missing. There is invasive, scaled retouch on both faces, but this is less extensive on the flatter face. A very small amount of cortex survives on both faces. Because of damage it cannot be certain whether or not there was a tranchet flake removed originally. Therefore …

This lithic implement, made on a tertiary blade, is sub-triangular in plan and cross-section. The dorsal surface has three negative scars with corresponding arrises. On the dorsal face there is fine retouch along the right mesal edge. There is also a small length of fine retouch on the left edge opposite the discolouration at the proximal end. This retouch is semi-abrupt, short and sub-parallel. The distal end of the featureless ventral face appears to have…

An incomplete late Mesolithic or Neolithic stone implement, possibly an axe, adze or mace (c. 7000 BC-c. 2350 BC). This object may have been oval and symmetrical in shape when complete. In plan, the fiished end is evenly rounded and the sides flare to a break either side of the hourglass perforation. A break has occurred mid-way across the perforation. In cross-section the perforation seems to have had a diameter of about 17.5mm. One face is slightly more convex that the other face and each face have striations. The implement is made of an unidentified igneous rock. It is dark g

A complete Mesolithic flint 'Thames pick' tranchet axehead or adze (c. 9000 BC-c. 4000 BC). This implement has been made on an elongated flint nodule which has been flaked overall, except for a small area at the butt end where the cortex remains. This implement is sub-rectangular in plan and side view, sub-square in cross-section. Mid-way along its length, two of the four faces are 'waisted'. The sharp cutting edge is formed by oblique removal of two 'tranchet' flakes. A small portion at the butt end has been battered indicating that the implement may also have been used as a hamme…

It is sub-oval in cross-section except at the butt end where it is sub triangular in cross-section. The dorsal face has about 80% off-white cortex and the ventral face has been crudely flaked all over. A large indentation on the ventral face appears to have been made deliberately. The implement seems not to have a cutting edge but may have been damaged while in use. However, the patina is the same as elsewhere. The butt end is worked overall and is relativel…
