A complete copper alloy Roman phallic mount. The object is convex and 'T-shaped' in plan, the phallus itself being triangular in cross-section and its straight sides gradually converging towards the raised, moulded tip. At the other end, the testicles project at a right angle from either side of the phallus with an oblique grooves separating the rounded testicles from the base of the phallus. The reverse is concave, with a single square-sectioned pin at the centre. There remains  much of the white metal coating on the front of the object. Length: 33.24mm. &…

The opposite end has a slight dome shaped terminal which is pierced by a single rivet hole (diameter: 2.0mm) Directly below this piercing is a cast transverse bar which separates the terminal from the D sectioned bar. Cast copper alloy stud or mount - possibly a handle / lid of probable medieval or post medieval date (1400-1800). The mount is relatively small and comprises solely of the head - the shank is lost and would have been a separate part which fitted into a rectangular shaped recess on the reverse. Given the form it is hard to suggest from what it comes - as it might be several different things - preferred is a separate handle or lid / knop most probably from portable furniture. The head of the artefact is circular in plan with a smooth heavily patinated green surface - it is decorated wit…

A cast lead alloy vessel escutcheon or mount of uncertain date. The artefact is sub-triangular / wedge shaped in plan tapeing from a realtively thick upper edge to a narroweded blunted point. In profile the artefact is crescentic. The artefact is D shaped in cross section. Through the upper edge a transverse cast hole is present (diameter 4.6mm) the external edges of which are recessed or funnel like. Cast copper alloy hooked sword belt mount of probable post medieval date (1600-1750 AD). The mount is irregular in plan being broadly oval with two sub-rectangular knops at either end. It is D shaped in cross section. The front of the mount has beveled edges and a convex profile. The hook is formed from a relatively thick D shaped projection which is bent back upon itself to create a U shaped hook. The hook has been broken approximately ¾ along its length. A copper-alloy mount of Roman date. This mount, which depicts a stylised lion's head, has several parallels on the PAS database - see, for example, ESS-902974 and BH-595E03. The nature of the fixings (see below) suggest it is probably a furniture escutcheon. A similar fitting, albeit from the handle of a metal vessel, was found in excavations at Verulamium (see Frere, 1972, fig. 43, no. 141) and the piece is also comparable to the smaller lion-headed casket mounts of the 1st century AD (see Borrill in Partridge, 1998, p. 320). The mount is umbonate in form (being oval in plan and D…

A cast copper alloy champlevé enamelled mount - most probably from a casket or reliquary chest of high medieval date (c. AD. 1150-1250). The style of the mount is not as elegant as that known from Limoges and it is possible this may be an English or another continental piece in the same style. The plate is flat and rectangular; in profile it is bowed slightly, possibly by movement in the ploughsoil but probably by being levered from the wooden casket. The two ends of the mount are both broken and the breaks are patinated suggesting the damage is in antiquity / old. Four rivet holes a…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy mount or stud inlaid with enamel and millefiori dating to the earlier Roman period, c. AD 50-300. The mount is originally was a circular disc in plan but due to movement within the ploughsoil has lost much of its original edge and some surface. In plan it is rectangular with a flat reverse. From the centre of the reverse the remains of a square sectioned shank extends. The shank seems to be complete although it is short and stubby having a rounded terminal. It measures 5.1mm wide and 5.6mm thick, it projects 4.1mm from the reverse face. An irregula…

A cast copper alloy mount or inlay probably from a casket, chest, box or tomb of high 'Gothic' later medieval date 1350-1500. The mount is in the form of a gothic style letter B with the upright having pointed serifs and the loops of the B all being angular; the central stem is formed from an inwardly projecting lobe which is pierced at the mid-point by a very slight hole. It is likely that a fixing pin would have fitted here. The reverse face is uneven and poorly finished. The central pin hole has a drilled countersunk recess and there are the remains of four spots of white metal / s…

Cast copper alloy mount of probable post medieval date (1500-1650). The mount is in the form of an acorn being an irregular oval shape in plan and D shaped in cross section. The mount has been abraded and rounded in the plough-soil causing it to become slightly symmetrical in both plan and profile. The front face of the mount is decorated with a series of transverse incised lines. Extending from the lower edge of the mount is an L shaped projection, possibly representing a stalk. A cast copper alloy harness mount of uncertain date - possibly Roman (AD 45-350) or Post Medieval (AD 1600-1800). The object is oval in plan with a raised central boss with a anthropomorphic face / mask. The central face is rounded with flattened pellet eyes, arched brows and a wide nose. The mouth is depicted by a slightly downturned groove and either side of the head a raised ridged curve represents ears. The hair consists of a horizontal line or raised moulding above which there is no decoration, possibly representing a bald head in the style of a tonsure. This suggests the figure …

A cast copper alloy bovine (bulls head) vessel / bucket mount dated to the later Iron Age / Early Roman period 300 BC - 300 AD. The style of this example is more likely to be early Roman in date and be attributed to a long lived 'Celtic' or 'Native' Iron Age or Romano-British trend. The mount is an irregular triangular shape in plan and an irregular triangular wedge shape in cross section. The sides of the mount are faceted and the rear face is concave with an irregular cell shaped depression. The front face of the mount (bull) is most elaborately decorated. The top edge of the bul…

A cast copper alloy strap fitting (mount) or belt plate fragment of probable medieval date (AD 1100-1350). The artefact is sub-rectangular in plan and domed in profile. The upper surface has a cast design which has been gilded and also design detailing has been pierced. The upper surface is both eroded and corroded and much of the detail is lost; the cast design is intricate and most probably a quadruped (whose feet are depicted as paws) facing left with a spiral shaped tail and forward facing head.
