Much clipped contemporary copy (possibly from a continental source) of a silver short cross penny of King John, Class Va. The reasons that this may be a forgery is the very large and atypical coarse portrait on the obverse and the combination of moneyer and mint on the reverse. There is not a moneyer whose initials start WA[...]E at the mint at Exeter ([E]X on reverse of coin). It is therefore suggested that this coin is a contemporary forgery and formed from elements taken from several coins of the period. Thanks are extended to Dr David Symons Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery for…

Silver cut half penny of John, probably Class 5b -6a, Mint Chichester, moneyer unknown. 1204/5-1217. The dating of this coin is based on the style of the closed E on the obverse, with a very long central bar (fig. 10 North) , and the closed C with an ornate closure (fig 27). The form of these letters are used during class 6 although the use of the closed E is only recorded in Class 6a. However, the mint at Chichester is only open during the period of Class 5b (1204/5 - 1209).

Silver penny of either King John or Henry III minted in London by the moneyer Abel between 1204 - 1222. The coin fits best into Class Vc 1204-1209 which is within the reign of King John. The obverse of the coin has been over-struck by a copy of the reverse; the most likely cause for this is that it is a result of a blunder in the mint and that this coin has stuck to the upper face of the die and then been re-struck against another blank die causing a mirrored version to be created and the impression of the coin having two reverse faces.

Silver cut half penny of either King John or Henry III. It is likely that this cut half is of Class which spans the reigns of John and Henry. The other deciding factors are missing due to the nature of the coin. It is likely that the coin was minted between 1209 and 1217. The mint is London; the moneyer cannot be made out due to the nature of the coin.

If the mint is Winchester, as the W on the reverse could imply, then the moneyer is likely to be either Lukas or Miles. The coin type is therefore likely to fit into class 5. This supposition is because there are only two moneyers with a name finishing in the letter S to work at Winchester and Winchester is the only mint recorded with moneyers with a name finishing in the letter S in this period .
