A thin, incomplete, unidentified silver component. The item is semi-circular in plan, and retangular in cross section. It appears to be incomplete, with clean and linear break points on the two ends of the circular frame suggesting it has been cut, perhaps before it was intended to be melted down. On what is presumably the front facing surface of the component, there are two parrallel grooves which run along the circumference of the inside edge. The depth of the grooves is not uniform and at points the recesses are too faint to be visible. This may be the result of wear. The…

A cast copper alloy artefact of unknown function of probable Roman date. The artefact is irregular in plan and flat in profile. A single cast beaded / raised rib separate the plate into two parts, either side of this rib are marks that might be described as laureate wreaths. The reverse is plain and undecorated. The artefact is a mid grey green colour with a well formed patina - it is recovered from an area rich in later Roman artefacts and coins. The artefact measures 19.1mm length, 24.1mm width, is 2.3mm across the plate and the rib projects 0.6mm. It weighs 4.01 grams

A square (or lozenge / diamond) shaped cast sheet metal artefact - most probably of later medieval or post medieval date (AD 1250-1700). The upper surface is uniform in width and length, the sides are all faceted / bevelled. The surface is smooth and well patinated. There is no incised or applied decoration. The reverse face is similar patinated but has a rougher surface. A central grey line divides the piece in half from corner to corner - this is possibly the remains of a grey solder - suggesting this plate was applied to either another object or possibly a long pin. A direct parall…

Two almost identical cast copper alloy artefacts of unknown function but of most probable later post medieval or modern date (AD 1650 -1850). In shape and size both artefacts are very similar being semi-circular (D shaped) in plan and sub-rectangular in profile with a distinctive external chamfered edge. The two external pointed edges possibly suggest that a rectangular bar extended from each. Both also have a vertically aligned groove on both faces. In form they most resemble the external edges of buckle frames. They both have a light grey green colour with a powdery surface patina. D…

An incomplete fragment most probably part of a copper alloy "Moustache-shaped" object probably of Middle Bronze Age to Middle Iron Age date (1500-300 BC). The artefact is heavily rolled resulting in abrasion to all surfaces. What remains is globular in form (teardrop shaped) with an oval cross section. It is probably one of a pair of pointed drop-shaped elements conjoined by an integrally cast bar. The remains of a heavily eroded rectangular bar is present on one side of the droplet. The external edges are all decorated with multiple longitudinal grooves The metal is a mid-green in co…

A large broadly triangular piece of iron of uncertain function or date. The iron fragment is hammer worked and is broadly D shaped in cross section. It is pierced in four places - at the apex, twice on the base and singly at the midpoint. The surface is irregular and the reverse face has several areas of spalling and corrosion. The artefact is recorded due to the upper surface seeming to have a series of interlaced designs along the midpoint / spine. This interpretation is uncertain due to condition. Given the form and shape it is possible that this is from a decorative hinge from eit…

It is uncertain if this is functional or decorative. There are no drilled holes or fixing points present; likewise there is no applied or incised decoration. The metal is a mid-grey green colour with a corroded surface patina. A direct parallel ha…
