Fragment from a cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable later medieval or post medieval date (1400-1700). The strap fitting is broken and only a small amount survives. The fragment is irregular in plan consisting of two conjoined lobed flower petals. There is no incised decoration present but the fragment has evidence of heavy filling on both faces. The reverse face shows no signs of fixings suggesting that the original artefact would probably have been fixed by a single rivet. The fragment measures 17.4mm length, 11.7mm width, is 1.8mm thick and weighs 1.27 grams.…

Cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable medieval date (1300-1500). The strap fitting is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and in profile; the edges are bevelled / faceted. The front face is slightly domed and decorated with a cast and possibly chip carved design. This design consists of a series of interlaced geometric patterns with horizontal bands at the base of the design and chevrons at the top. Overal the design could be interpreted as being vaguely zoomorphic. The reverse face of the fitting is dished, irregular and undecorated. A single projection is present. Thi…

Cast copper alloy strap distributor of Roman date. The strap distributor is cast in one piece being irregular in plan, broadly cruciform in shape, and sub-rectangular in cross section. The reverse face is affected by corrosion but is hollow. The front face is relatively flat and consists of four equal relatively short arms forming a regular cross. The edges of each arm expand and taper along their length, with the mouth terminating in a flared edge. These flared edges form broadly C shaped scrolls and are cast in one piece. The terminal of each arm is an irregular square shape and hol…
