Cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is an octofoil shape in plan with four wide lobes interspaced by four small knops. The front face is flat and it is rectangular in section. The edges of the fitting are bevelled. The front face is undecorated but may have originally had a gilded applied surface. The reverse face is also flat and has two cast sub-rectangular projections (hooks) positioned on either edge of the fitting. These hooks pass through the strap leather and hold the fitting in place. A small section of mid grey black co…

An incomplete cast copper alloy strap fitting of later or post medieval date (AD 1400 - 1600). The fitting is irregular in plan, broadly rectangular with scalloped edges and tapering terminals. One terminal is broken away and the edge is patinated and eroded. The strap fitting is decorated by a series of transverse raised ridges dividing the plate into three parts. The central zone has the remains of an inscribed devise whose details are lost. The two flanking zones are each pierced at the mid-point and would have held small rivets to attach the plate to a box or leather strap. The rev…

Cast copper alloy mount of probable late medieval or post medieval date (1400-1600). The mount is sub-oval in plan and domed in cross section (D-shaped). The front face is convex and undecorated. The reverse is concave. From a central position a small square sectioned spike projects; thisterminates in a blunnt tapered point. The spike measures 2.2mm x 1.9mm and projects 14.5mm. The mount is a dark mid green colour with a patchy surface patina. The length of the spike would suggest that this mount was used either in a piece of furniture or through a relatively thick piece of leather, po…

Cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1600-1700). The strap fitting is irregular in plan (being broadly oval) and sub-rectangular in profile; the edges are bevelled / faceted. The overall decorative design consists of a decorative stylised human head shape depicted on a raised boss. The shape of the face is broadly oval with hair being depicted in a 'basin like' style. Around the central decorative boss the artefact is relatively plain and flat, The reverse face of the fitting is irregular but broadly flat and undecorated. Two cast sub-rectangular…

Cast copper alloy fragment from a strap fitting / belt mount of post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is irregular in plan having a semi-circular plate at the base from which emergeces a rectangular element which tapers and expands along its length. The sides are bevelled and there is no cast, applied or incised decoration. The reverse of the fitting is plain and undecorated - two projecting hooks extend from the median line both are folded back upon themselves and broken; these would have passed through the leather of the belt and have been folded back to secure it in plac…

A broken fragment from a cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is broken on its upper edge - the extant fragment is sub-triangular from which descends an oval shaped knopped terminal. In profile it is D shaped and the long edges are all bevelled. From the lower face / reverse face a single small hook / integrally cast spike projects. The fitting is a mid-green colour with a well preserved patina . Similar examples of strap fittings can be seen in Brian Read's book 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (pages 34-37). The fit…

Cast copper alloy harness fitting of Medieval date (1250-1400). The fitting is incomplete and represents only one broken element of a larger composite piece. The extant fragment is broadly rectangular in both plan and cross section. In design it is probably best described as a slotted bar which would originally have held a pivoting central spindle upon which enamelled and gilded harness pendants would have been displayed. Only one arm of this bar survives being broken across a pierced oval tab positioned at one edge. From this broken edge the bar tapers in both thickness and width term…

Cast copper alloy mount of probable post medieval date (1500-1650). The mount is in the form of an acorn with two oak leaves beneath; it is an irregular cruciform shape in plan and D shaped in cross section. The edges of the mount are slightly bevelled with the upper face is convex. The mount has been abraded and rounded in the plough-soil causing it to become slightly symmetrical in both plan and profile. A cast copper alloy link or strap distributor of uncertain date - most probably medieval or post medieval. The link is cast in one piece being formed of two annular rings conjoined by two horizontal bars. The rings and bars are all rectangular in cross section. Casting flashes / seams have been removed by filing and it has a mid green brown coloured surface patina. The link seems to have little practical use and is not designed for harness or any function which would have placed it under strain. Given the casting methods and fisnihing a later medieval or more probably post medieval da…

The fragmentary remains of a cast copper alloy hooked mount / strap fitting of probable post medieval date (1550-1700 AD). The mount is broken and all that remains is part of the upper plate which descends to form a hook. The hook is formed from the lower plate of the mount being bent back upon itself forming an even U shaped hook. The upper body of the mount is lost due to an old break; it would have been pierced and riveted to attach the mount to a strap or some similar leather garment. There are no decorative designs present or any trace of applied surface, such as gilding or tinnin…

A cast copper-alloy fragment from a looped strap fitting of later medieval or post medieval date. The fragment is U or staple shaped in plan, rectangular in profile and has an oval cross section. The terminals are both broken and worn. The internal surface of the loop is worn and abraded through wear. The fragment is a mid green colour with a well formed polished surface patina. It is likely that the fragment is from something similar to a crotal or rumbler bell. The fragment measures 20.8mm in length, 16.9mm in width, is a maximum of 4.8mm thick, and weighs 7.09 grams.

A medieval cast copper alloy strap distributor. The distributor is circular with a rounded central dome which rises from a flat rim. Emerging from below the rim is an integral ring which contains four wide slots equally spaced around its edge. Through three of these slots are the remains of folded domed fittings closed and secured by single rivets. On two of the fittings are the remains of the original leather straps. Each of the fitting has a rounded and domed upper part with a single integral rivet emerging from its reverse. The lower side is narrower and its rounded terminal is pi…

A cast copper-alloy post-medieval toggle-clasp of 16th- or 17th-century date. At one end the flat object has a rectangular terminal (W.: 14.4mm) with cusped ends and a transverse median groove. There are diagonal incisions decorating the half above the groove with a cabled (ropework) design. At the base of this terminal element is a central attachment perforation that retains the orange/brown corroded remains of an iron rivet. Below the terminal the mount incurves to a waist (W.: 9.7mm). Below is a large, central circular openwork hole (Dia.: 6.1mm) either side of which the mount expa…

A copper-alloy post-medieval strap-fitting dating from the Post-Medieval period, AD 1500 - 1700. The mount is sub-triangular in plan. At the upper edge of the mount are three knops protruding from the upper edge. These are slightly flattened and damaged, presumed in antiquity. The fitting then tapers to circular knop at the lower edge. The upper face is slightly convex. The reverse side is flat. On the reverse there are a pair of lugs, these have been folded toward each other to form a fastening. Read (2001) illustrates similar examples on page 35 fig 20. He dates these mounts with in…
