An incomplete and abraded cast copper alloy Roman Colchester derivative style Polden Hill (dolphin) brooch dating to c.AD 80-120. The wings are short and tubular with a semi-circular cross section, the end caps are pierced and would have held an axis bar, now lost. The back of the head is open revealing a wide and deep socket where the spring mechanism would have once sat. A fragment from the lower bow and foot of a cast copper alloy brooch most probably of Roman date (AD50-350). The alloy of the metal is relatively unusual seeming to be heavily leaded creating a very grey coloured alloy. The form of the brooch comprises an angular bow which has transverse ribs terminating in a large moulded D shaped bead from which an oval shaped foot descends. The reverse of the foot is flat and abraded but seems originally to have a small vertical rib that formed a slight catch plate. The upper bow and head of the brooch is lost. There is no evidence of an inlaid or …

An incomplete copper alloy headstud brooch of Roman date (75-200AD). The head of the brooch is incomplete as the sides are lost through erosion; this has resulted in the loss of the spring fixing mechanism.
