The wings are short and tubular with a semi-circular cross section, the end caps are pierced and would have held an axis bar, now lost. The back of the head is open revealing a wide and deep socket where the spring mechanism would have once sat. The head of the brooch is incomplete as the sides are lost through erosion; this has resulted in the loss of the spring fixing mechanism. An integrally cast head plate extends from the upper edge of the head - the upper edge is rolled back to form an eroded hook and a circular hole pierces it at the centre.
