The head of the brooch is incomplete as the sides are lost through erosion; this has resulted in the loss of the spring fixing mechanism. An integrally cast head plate extends from the upper edge of the head - the upper edge is rolled back to form an eroded hook and a circular hole pierces it at the centre.
