Report on post-medieval silver whistle from Near Hereford, Herefordshire
Fragmentary silver whistle made from silver sheet, broken and flattened at one end. The mouthpiece intact, shaped for blowing, and slit relatively undamaged. Remains of illegible maker's mark just above slit. Raised twisted rib decoration on the body of the whistle and border with stamped flower-heads between incised lines. Solder marks under the slit may indicate there was originally a small handle at this point, as on other reported examples (see below).
Compare with a fragmentary whistle, also with…

Object of star form, irregularly-shaped, made from thin silver sheet with pointed ends of which one appears to have been broken off. On one side, crude scratchmarks in form of a cross; on the other an impressed circle.
The object is undiagnostic and appears to have been made as an offcut in silver sheet after other circular objects have been made around it. It is not therefore possible to date it.

A thin, incomplete, unidentified silver component.
The item is semi-circular in plan, and retangular in cross section. It appears to be incomplete, with clean and linear break points on the two ends of the circular frame suggesting it has been cut, perhaps before it was intended to be melted down. On what is presumably the front facing surface of the component, there are two parrallel grooves which run along the circumference of the inside edge. The depth of the grooves is not uniform and at points the recesses are too faint to be visible. This may be the result of wear. The…

I have examined a silver object reported found at an uncertain location. The object is a piedfort or piéfort striking of the coin-type known as the double parisis of Charles IV the Fair, King of France (1322-1328). The type was originally introduced in 1323. The reference to the coin is J. Duplessy, Les monnaies françaises royales (1988) no. 244b; an alternative reference work, J. Lafaurie, Les monnaies des rois de France (1951), no. 224, records known piedfort strikings as well as coins and in it there are listed three piedforts of this denomination.
Finds of single coins are not…

The silver gilt fragment is an incomplete fragment from a larger object, most of the surviving fragment taking the form of a stylized animal head, modelled in relief. The animal head is characterized by a blunt, rounded snout with two circular recesses fore eyes, lips delineated by single incised lines, and backward projecting ear. The mouth bites a shaft of circular cross-section, while the neck has been modified to a flattened plate-like cross-section, with suggestion of an expanding flare.
The cross-sections of the projections from neck and mouth of this fragment indicate that t…
