Silver short cross penny of uncertain ruler 1180-1247. The coin has been poorly struck with the best preserved face being the obverse. The reverse is a mirror negative image of the obverse and none of the lower die impression survives. This has been caused by the moneyer making a mistake during striking. The moneyer has not removed the previous struck coin from the die, which has stuck to the lower part of the die, and then been over-struck by this coin. This has resulted in a good obverse impression and the details of the other coin being impresssed in the negative on the reverse. …

German Denar (Pfennig) of Cologne, struck under Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden (1238-61) as 'Elekt' (1238-9); mint Soerst normally spelt Soest, (in Westphalia, east of Dortmund). Note he is depicted bare-headed; his coins as 'Minister' (1239-44) and Archbishop (1244-61) show him wearing a mitre. It has been pierced at a position of six o'clock on the reverse. This corresponds with a position of ten o'clock on the obverse. The coin is in very worn and slightly corroded. The position of the hole would suggest that the reverse was designed to be seen.
