A complete medieval silver hammered penny of King Edward I (AD 1272-1307). Minted at London. Class 4e dating to AD 1282-1289. North, II, 1991, p. 29, no. 1027. Obverse: Crowned bust of king facing. Obverse inscription: +EDW R ANGL' DNS hyB. Reverse: Long cross pattee quartering reverse, three pellets in each quarter in inner circle. Pellet before 'LON'. Reverse inscription: CIVI / TAS / LON / DON. It measures 18.76mm in diameter, 0.77mm in thickness, and weighs 1.30g. Die axis: 11 o'clock.

The mint and coin sub-type cannot be identified due to the polished condition which seems deliberate and contemporary with loss. Such augmentation might suggest that this coin was a touch piece or significant for some reason - now lost. From what remains of the bust a date in the period 1301-1310 can be suggested due to the bi-foliate type of crown.
