Incomplete cast copper alloy fragment of unknown function and date. The fragment seems to be a looped terminal off set at 90 degrees on a sub-rectangular bar. The bar is broken near the terminal and the break is relatively recent and unpatinated. The rectangular bar is faceted being broadly D shaped in cross section. The looped terminal has a cast and slightly recessed hole through it; this is oval in shape and does not seem to be worn. No parallel of any form or date has yet been found. On the balance of probabilities the fragment is more likely to be Roman than any other date howeve…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy fragment of unknown function or date. The fragment is broadly square in plan with an irregular cast triangular shaped hole through the centre. From the upper edge a sub-rectangular shaped shank extends which is broken and badly abraded. The fragment is a mid green colour with a polished but badly abraded patina. No direct parallel for this artefact has been found. It is possible that it may be the looped terminal from a medieval padlock key but the slight nature of this artefact might preclude this. The artefact measures 12.8mm length, is 12.1mm width and 2.3mm…

Cast copper alloy fragment of an unknown object. It is broadly foot (L) shaped but may well be a fragment of a large thick buckle. Due to the fragmentary nature of the find, it is difficult to date. A parallel has not been found. It is a mid green colour with a heavy polished patina. Other finds in the area would suggest a Roman date. The fragment measures 25.3mm length, 22.9mm width, is 8.0mm thick and weighs 12.9 grams.

Incomplete copper alloy hinged bow and fantail brooch (43-200AD). The wings are complete with a rolled complete casing holding the axis bar for the hinged pin. The pin is incomplete and housed within a cut notch between the two rolled cylindrical casings. The axis bar holding the pin is made from iron. The pin itself has a stepped profile; in cross section it is sub-rectangular. From the top / head of the brooch a small head loop extends. This loop is heavily worn (by wear / use abrasion rather than plough damage) on the upper left hand edge. The bow head is narrow with a graceful sl…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy 'amphora-shaped' strap end of late Roman date (300-450 AD). The strap end is broadly sub-triangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. The edges of the strap end have slightly beveled / faceted edges. The strap end is incomplete in that the upper part of the strap fitting has been lost. It is possible that originally this was iron as an orange corrosion product is present on many of the surfaces (although this may be a result of the burial conditions. The upper part of the strap end has two pierced sub-oval (kidney) shaped holes which are irre…

Incomplete copper alloy two-piece Colchester derivative (Dolphin) bow brooch of Roman date (43-150AD). The wings are semi-cylindrical with perforated wing / end caps. The wing caps are incomplete and the axis bar and spring are lost. The spring would have been formed from a length of copper alloy wire which would have attached by an external chord to a rearward facing hook. This hook is located at the centre of the wings on the upper edge. The bow head of the brooch is hump-like, and slightly angular. The bow is D shaped in cross section. It tapers to pointed foot.
