Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1300 - 1550). The weight is rectangular in plan and section. The sides are faceted and the front and rear faces have undecorated rectangular panels present. The base is relatively flat and even. A drilled transverse hole (diameter: 4.4mm) is present on the upper edge of the weight; this has become oval in shape through wear. The weight is a mid grey white colour with an even patina that covers all surfaces. It has been marked and abraded in the soil this has caused it to become asymmetrical. Similar standing weights have been d…

An incomplete copper-alloy Hod Hill type Roman brooch dating to c. AD 43 - 100. The brooch is T-shaped in plan and D-shaped in profile. The head and wings have been formed by the metal being rolled back upon itself, holding in place the axis bar; it is unclear whether the axis bar still remains due to corrosion. A small protrusion on the underside of the head is all that remains of the hinged pin. The bow tapers to a broken foot; the catchplate has also been lost. Four raised collars on the back of the bow expand wider than the brooch; this is the only visible decoration on the front …

Copper alloy (round) coin weight for a gold Angel dated to the later medieval and post medieval periods post 1464 (1464 - 1642). The weight itself is relatively unabraded, however much of the detailing has been lost through heavy filling and some surface corrosion. The front face of the weight depicts a standing winged figure of St. Michael holding spear and spearing dragon which he stands astride. The dragon is mostly lost at the foot by filing. St Michael is shown with a halo and spread wings which are very detailed. The image is enclosed by a circlet of pellets. There is no inscrip…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy mount or possible fitting of unknown date or function. The mount is broadly triangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. In profile it is curved but this is probably due to movement in the soil. The mount expands irregularly from a relatively narrow edge to a much wider one, unfortunately both ends are broken. The narrowest edge seems to have broken across a punched rivet hole which may suggest that this was originally a belt or book fitting. The front face is decorated with a series of punched designs; these broadly echo the overall shape of the artefact…

An incomplete cast copper alloy harness fitting - possibly a strap union - of late early medieval date (11th Century 1000-1100 AD). The fragment is irregular in plan being broadly sub-rectangular with two cast holes positioned irregularly. It is rectangular in profile with bevelled edges. In form it is similar to a buckle. The body of the fitting tapers and expands along its length with two rounded projections at one edge and two broken and worn edges at the other. In the mid-point to triangular shaped projections are positioned. The p[late is pierced irregularly by two cast holes, on…

Cast copper alloy fragment of unknown function or date. The fragment is broadly square in plan with an irregular cast triangular shaped hole through the centre. From the upper edge a sub-rectangular shaped shank extends which is broken and badly abraded. The fragment is a mid green colour with a polished but badly abraded patina. No direct parallel for this artefact has been found. It is possible that it may be the looped terminal from a medieval padlock key but the slight nature of this artefact might preclude this. The artefact measures 12.8mm length, is 12.1mm width and 2.3mm…

Cast copper alloy single looped rectangular buckle of later medieval date (1300-1450). The frame of the buckle is rectangular in plan with distinctive corner knops and slightly curved frame; the frame is also sub-rectangular in cross section. The buckle frame is complete at one edge is a recessed and off-set strap bar which has an oval shaped cross section. At the mid point of this strap bar is a slight contraction, to which it is likely that the pin was fitted and would have aided stabilisation. The pin and plate are lost. Around the frame on the opposite edge a length of sheet coppe…

An incomplete copper alloy hinged two-piece Colchester derivative (Dolphin) brooch of Roman date (55-100AD). The wings are complete and cylindrical. A longitudinal hole is present to take the axis bar. At the centre of the wings, on the reverse face is a vertical slit. This slit is filled with iron corrosion possibly suggesting that the axis bar or pin were iron, although no other iron corrosion is present on the bow of the brooch. The bow head of the brooch is relatively flat although this may be due to distortion in the ground. More commonly these bows are hump-like, and slightly an…

An incomplete copper alloy Hod Hill style brooch of early Roman date (43-75AD). The brooch is incomplete having lost the upper part of the head, including hinge fitting, axis bar and sprung pin; the break is old and patinated. An incomplete fragment of a copper-alloy bow brooch of probable mid 1st century date. Due to the fragmentary nature of the artefact it is possible that this brooch may be either a rosette/thistle type or a Landon Down type brooch both dated to the same period (25-60 AD) The spring and pin is missing but would originally have been contained within a half-cylinder wing, which is aligned horizontally on the underside of the head.. A poorly preserved and abraded sub-rectangular, integrally-cast bow / plate, extends from the base of the head, tapering to a broken edge. The bow extends from…

A near complete copper alloy two-piece head stud bow brooch of Roman date (100-200AD). The wings are complete being cylindrical in plan with closed pierced ends through which an axis bar passes. There is a cylindrical cover between the wings on the reverse and a central wedge has been cut to fit the pin; which is incomplete. The cover seems to be complete and there is no evidence of a seam possibly suggesting it was cast in one piece. The hinged pin is sub-rectangular in cross section and is broken. Incomplete cast copper alloy fragment of unknown function and date. The fragment seems to be a looped terminal off set at 90 degrees on a sub-rectangular bar. The bar is broken near the terminal and the break is relatively recent and unpatinated. The rectangular bar is faceted being broadly D shaped in cross section. The looped terminal has a cast and slightly recessed hole through it; this is oval in shape and does not seem to be worn. No parallel of any form or date has yet been found. Incomplete copper alloy fragment possibly a penannular brooch of probable early Roman date (50BC-100 AD). The fragment consists of a curved penannular shaped D sectioned length of copper alloy wire. The wire is 2.3mm width and 1.9mm thick. It widens / thickens slightly at either end possibly suggesting that these are the remnants of the terminals. The brooch is a mid green colour with a polished patina which covers the majority of the artefact. Several small areas of the brooch have been affected by corrosion. The abrasion and movement in the ploughsoil has also resulted in the distor…
