An uncertain lead alloy artefact of unknown date. The fragment is broadly cylindrical tapering from a rounded bulbous terminal to a narrow point. The lower section seems to have faceted sides and it is 'decorated' in several areas with four incised lines forming a saltire cross. It is possible that this is a scrap piece of lead which has been augmented for no reason by persons unknown. It is a mid grey white colour with an even thick surface patina. A purpose or date cannot be suggested for the piece. It measures: 35.5mm length, 8.2mm wide and 6.8mm thick; it weighs 9.74 grams.

A copper alloy figurine of uncertain date, possibly Late Post Medieval to Modern (AD 1750-1900). The type of animal depicted is unclear, the figure is in a dancing pose with both arms outstretched. The face has circular indentations to represent the eyes, a fairly large nose and wide mouth with teeth showing. The left ear is rounded and the right ear is slightly larger and sub-rectangular in form. The hair is represented and is spiked up and flat on top. The torso has three small circular indentations to represent two nipples and the belly button. The left arm is outstretched and t…

An incomplete cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD 43 - 1650). In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular and in profile is bi-conical. The central perforation has been started from each side of the object but remains unfinished. On one of the faces the indentation is more pronounced than the other face where it is little more than a small concave impression. Each face of the object is worn and has no visible decoration. The surface of the spindle whorl is cream in colour. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficu…

A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD 43 - 1650). In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular and in profile is sub-oval. There is a central sub-circular perforation which measures 7.32 mm in diameter on one face and is slightly narrower on the opposing face measuring 6.72 mm. This irregularity is possibly due to wear. This example is undecorated on both faces. The surface of the spindle whorl is cream in colour and abraded. A small silver disc - possibly a coin blank of uncertain date. Although without parallel the disc is recorded due to its findspot. One side is domed whilst the other is very slightly dished. Both sides are marked, but no discernible pattern is present. The finder has commented on the similarity between this and small silver units from the late Iron Age. Such a find would fit well within the landscape in which it was found. The disc measures 8.6mm diameter, is 2.8mm thick and weighs 0.9 grams

An incomplete fragment from a cast copper alloy object of uncertain date and function. The artefact consists of a oval sectioned shank terminating in a rounded bulbous knop. In shape it is similar to that seen on post medieval pursebars and seems to be far too robust to be part of a dress pin. The finder has noted similarities to a votive bridle fitting of Roman date ( Mills:1995: 145 ref RB470). The artefact is a light green colour with a purple corrosion product reminiscent of that seen on late early medieval finds and those from the post medieval periods. The break across the shank…

A poorly preserved incomplete copper alloy artefact of unknown function of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD). The fragment is an irregular pennanular (crescent) shape with a section that varies between oval and rounded. The external edges are all rounded and a direct parallel as to function has not been found, in shape it is similar to a spindle whorl or bead or possibly an irregular loop on a much larger object. There is no decoration or applied surface present and the metal is a mid-green colour with an abraded sandy surface patina. A date cannot be suggested without knowi…

A poorly preserved cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl or weight of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD), most probably later medieval (1150-1600 AD). The spindle whorl is irregular being broken and poorly preserved; it is now irregular in plan and rectangular in section; originally it would have been broadly circular. The central hole is circular and has been cast / set off centre; it has an internal diameter of 8.0mm. From what remains of the whorl both faces seem to be plain and undecorated. The spindle whorl has a mid-grey coloured surface irregular and eroded surface patin…

An incomplete cast copper alloy fragment of uncertain function or date; it is most likely to be either later medieval or post medieval in date (AD 1350 - 1700). The fragment is broadly oval in plan and rectangular in section. The edges are incomplete (although in places areas of scalloping survive) and it is possible that this may be waste from an industrial process or an incomplete / miscast object. The lower surface is flat and undecorated; the upper surface is rough with possibly a miscast / relief design. The edges suggest the profile was H shape - possibly similar to glass came …

A stone spindle whorl probably dating to the later prehistoric to later post medieval date (3000 BC - AD 1700) made of a course sandstone. It is circular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. The object has a regular hour glass shaped pierced hole through the whorl and this is set slightly off centre. The shape of this hole would suggest that it has been achieved by drilling from each side. The object has an even mid-brown patina. Egan (1998) states that spindle whorls were used from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period and that the cheaper, possibly home-made ceramic…
