Cast copper alloy ring of probable later Iron Age or Roman date (200 BC - 400 AD). The ring is broadly circular in plan and sub-oval in cross section. The ring is a mid brown colour with a well developed patina which covers all surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. There are no obvious wear facets on the internal surfaces. The use of this ring is difficult to interpret. The most likely functional use is as a harness (probably strap union) fitting. No clear parallels have been found for this artefact; it has been dated solely on the design, weight of the met…

A cast copper alloy ring of unknown date, most probably medieval (1250-1600). The function of the ring is unknown, given its size, wear and distortion it is most likely to be from a harness fitting. The ring is oval in plan and has a distinct angular sub-triangular cross section. The width of the ring is relatively uniform. There is no decoration on either the outer or inner surfaces. The internal edge of the ring is worn suggesting that it may have been a belt ring used to tighten or secure a leather strap; being so slight it is possibly part of personal dress. The ring has a well pr…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy ring of unknown date, probably from the Medieval to Post-Medieval period (c. AD 1200-1650). The ring would originally have formed a circular or oval shape in plan. What survives is a fragment of the original object which is sub-C shaped in plan, with uneven terminals where the object has been broken. The fragment is polygonal in cross section. The ring appears to be undecorated in the conventional sense. However, what could be interpreted as lettering/writing has been scratched into the surface of one side of the fragment. The fragment has a degree of s…

Cast copper alloy ring of probable Roman - Modern date (50 - 1800). The ring is circular in plan and lentoid (hexagonal) in cross section. There are traces of irregular file marks on several surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. A slight thickening of the ring is present on one edge - this maybe remains of a casting jet. The ring is oval in shape due to distortion and has wear facets on internal surfaces from use. The ring is a dark - mid greenish grey colour with a well developed patina which covers all surfaces. The patination of the metal would suggest a…

A copper alloy ring - possibly a finger ring - of uncertain date. In style the ring is undiagnostic, it is very small with one side of the hoop being wider than the other - possibly suggesting a front and back of the hoop. The ring is a mid brown colour with an abraded and corroded surface patina - this patina is similar in condition and colour to a 3rd century Roman coin found within the same. The form is not diagnostically Roman.
The ring measures 14.7mm diameter, width max 2.6mm min 1.4mm, thickness uniform 0.9mm, internal diameter 3.3mm. The ring weighs 0.54 grams

Cast copper alloy ring of probable Roman - Modern date (50 - 1800) probably post medieval (1500-1800). The ring is broadly circular in plan (with faceted edges) and is oval in cross section. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. A small projecting tab of metal is present on the outer surface of the ring. Opposite this on the other side of the frame is a flattened section .The external surface is amid greenish brown colour with a relatively well preserved patina. The patination of the metal would suggest a post medieval date. The function of the ring is varied; althou…

Cast copper alloy ring of probable Roman - Medieval date (50 - 1500). The ring is broadly circular in plan and is faceted oval in cross section. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. The external surface is grey-green colour with a relatively well preserved but slightly dusty surface patina. The patination of the metal would suggest a Roman or medieval date.
The ring measures 29.0mm diameter, the frame is 4.4mm wide, and is 3.3mm thick. The internal measurement is 20.1mm diameter. The ring weighs 5.97 grams.

Cast copper alloy ring of unknown date possibly of later prehistoric Late Bronze Age or Iron Age date (800 BC – 50 AD), however there is some possibility that it may date from the Roman period (50 – 410 AD). The ring is complete and is circular in plan and sub-oval (lentoid) in cross section. It measures 18.0mm in diameter, is 5.3mm wide, and is 4.7mm thick. The internal hole has a diameter of 9.2mm. The ring weighs 4.48 grams.
The ring is a mid green colour with a well developed and heavily polished patina which is badly abraded. The abrasion has removed any decoration; it is p…

A cast copper alloy ring of unknown date, most probably later prehistoric – Roman (300 BC- 400AD). The function of the ring is unknown, being too slight for functional harness and too large for a finger ring. The ring is circular in plan and has a distinct angular sub-triangular cross section. It has broken / cracked in one place; it is likely that this is relatively recent damage. The width of the ring is relatively uniform; on one internal edge are the partial remains of casting residue. This residue has been trimmed and filed but a distinct thickening is present. There is also an …

Cast copper alloy ring of unknown date probably either Roman (50 – 410 AD) or Medieval (1000 – 1550). The ring is incomplete, originally it would have been circular in plan and sub-oval (D shaped) in cross section. However, the ring has been broken and is now incomplete. The two broken edges are relatively recent although they are abraded suggesting an element of wear in the ploughsoil. The ring is now penannular in plan (C shaped). It measures 13.2mm in diameter, is 9.9mm wide, and is 5.2mm thick. The internal hole has a diameter of 12.8mm. The ring weighs 11.47 grams.
