An Iron Age copper alloy brooch of the La Tene I type dating to the 4th - 3rd century B.C. The brooch has a strongly arched bow that has a slightly expanded mid-section and a circular cross-section. The top of the arch extends to form the curled spring which is made from four curls with the pin still intact. Copper alloy Langton Down brooch, this has tubular wings that would have wraped around the spring encompassing it within a cylinder, but the spring is now missing. This is the central section of an incomplete copper alloy Birdlip brooch that dates to 50BC-AD50. The top of the brooch is missing resulting in the loss of the pin and mounting method. The remaining lower part of the head shows the top of the brooch would have been from narrow curving rod. At the base of the head is a moulded knee formed from a collar with an upturned beak below. The lower part of the leg is flat but again truncated resulting in the loss o he catchplate. Birdlip brooches are thought to be British variants of the continental Flugelfibel brooch.
