A copper alloy buckle. The buckle, cast, is roughly rectangular in plan, trapezoid in cross section. There is decoration running around the perimeter of the internal frame in the form of diagonal grooves. Each corner of the outer edge of the frame ends in a point knop although one corner is truncated with the knop now missing. Centrally, along each shorter outer edge the frame curves in an ‘M’ shape. The strap bar is truncated and missing. A slight indent present in the frame may indicate the original presence of a pin, now lost. Based on comparable examples this…

A copper-alloy ring of uncertain date. The ring is spherical in form with a slightly corroded knop to one side. The find is possibly a single looped buckle (1250-1650), the corroded knop being the remains of the pin, now truncated and corroded. Alternatively, the find could be a harness fitting, likely to be late medieval – post medieval in date.

A copper alloy post medieval two piece buckle. The buckle consists of a slightly curved, oval-rectangular frame. In the centre of each side is a drilled hole for the separate (and now missing) spindle. This find is stylistically similar to examples dated from the 17th– 18th century (1690 – 1790).

Cast copper alloy buckle fragment of a probable post-medieval 1720s-1790s date. The fragment comprises a corner of a rectangular buckle frame of lentoid section with moulded oval decoration within borders. There is light green corrosion on both surfaces. The curvature of the frame may suggest this is part of a shoe buckle. Similar examples of buckles can be seen in Whitehead 2003. The material and design is indicative of the buckles of the Georgian period, which were typically made of copper-alloy and had rectangular or sub-rectangular frames (Whitehead 2003, 103).

Cast copper alloy decorated buckle. Dark grey with frequent pale green patches of corrosion. It is a single loop frame, 'D' shaped with integral strap bar. There is a slight thickening midway along the strap bar which may suggest it also had an integral pin which has broken off. The front of the buckle is decorated with ropework. The object is quite badly decayed and needs conservation. Discussion: Very similar to No.122 in Whitehead (2003) p.25, this was dated 1450-1550.

Cast copper alloy rectangular buckle frame with rounded corners. The object is mid brown in colour with occasional areas of light green. It is broken in several places and one whole end of the frame is missing. The frame is oval in section at the ends but thickens along the sides becoming a rounded square. The buckle does not lie flat but is arched so that the middle of the long sides is the highest point. At this point the edges of the frame have been drilled to provide two holes for a separate spindle now missing. Assessment: 18th century shoe buckle frame similar to number 6…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval buckle. The frame is double-looped and each loop is trapezoidal in plan, with rounded ends and projecting lobes at each corner. The buckle is bent and twisted out of shape but appears to have originally been flat across both faces. The outside and inside edges on the front face are bevelled and each loop has a pin-rest though the pin is missing. The rear is undecorated. The strap bar is sub-square in cross-section and at each end of the bar there is a small lobed knop. The buckle is quite badly corroded with much of the surface covered …

Rounded rectangular frame, with thickened sides and thinned 'corners'. Holes for the bar are visible piercing right through the centre of each long side; each hole is 2.69mm in diameter. It is noticeable that two of the inside 'corners' on one long side of the frame are substantially thinner than the corresponding corners on the opposing side. Possibly suggesting heavy wear/friction here. The frame is slightly convex in profile and there are traces of gilding. Very graceful and elegant proportions. Decorative, possibly a shoe buckle; early 17th century?

Cast copper alloy loop-chape with single internal spike. The ‘cooking-pot’ shaped (sub-trapezoidal) loop-chape formed part of a two-piece shoe buckle, and would have originally been fitted with a single tongue. The loop-chape was used underneath the buckle frame to secure it to the strap: the internal spike would have been pushed through a hole in the under-latchet whilst the over-latchet would be secured to the frame using the tongue The condition of the loop-chape appears stable, but it has been quite damaged: much of the surface is missing, particularly on the curved se…
