Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A heavily worn and incomplete Bronze Age palstave axe head.
Extensive surface loss has occurred along the edges and surfaces of the find, giving the axe and thin irregular form.
The butt end is sub-square, and is slightly more truncated to one side. From the butt, the sides flare slightly. The side flanges are missing; however, the stop ridge is still prominently visible, especially on one side. From the stop ridge, the blade tapers slightly (due to surface loss) before flaring marginally to the cutting edge which is heavily truncated and rounded. A partial rib is visible on one face…

Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An Early Bronze Age flat axehead.
The find is truncated into two fragments with an irregular break towards the butt.
The axe is pitted with a light brown and mid green patina. The surfaces are flat and do not show any signs of side flanges.
From the butt, which is sub-oval in profile, the sides of the axe expand in width to the blade. Both tips of the blade are truncated, although one more so than the other. Both would have likely extended slightly further.

A fragment of a cast copper alloy ingot or 'cake' possibly dating from the Bronze Age period.
The object is irregular in plan and curved in profile with two smooth faces and a rough uneven inner face were truncated. The outer faces are rough and pitted.
This find may date to the Bronze Age, however without further metallurgical analysis of the find, it is difficult to say for certain, and the find could be of more recent date.

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A possible fragment of a Bronze Age socketed axehead of later Bronze Age date.
The fragment comprises the front portion of the axe head. The head appears hollow and widens into the blade. The cutting tip appears damaged.
The original surface is lost and the find is uneven and pitted.
While the find does bear a resemblance to a socketed axehead, it is possible, given the objects size, that this may have been a miniature axehead. These are associated with the late Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman periods.

A copper-alloy flanged flat axehead.
The axehead has a rounded arched butt, which bears evidence of slight truncation. Slightly diverging sides expand to a broad crescentic blade and cutting edge, with the blade tips at right angles to the sides with a slight recurve.
The axe has shallow hammered flanges which extend along the sides, rising gradually from the butt towards the middle of the axe before sloping down to the blade expansion.
The find likely dates to the later early Bronze Age (c.2500 – 1450 BC).

Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy socketed spearhead of likely middle to late Bronze Age date (circa. 1500-600BC).
The spearhead is broadly sub-triangular in plan and profile with a sub-oval/leaf-shaped blade. The blade tapers to a blunted apex. A pronounced mid-rib is present on both faces. The socket and shaft are broken. This is more apparent on one face of the spearhead than the other. It is possible that the shaft would have included loops as is commonly found on other spearheads from this period (Savory 1980, 50-52).
The socket retained pieces of wood, presumably remnants of the …

A copper alloy unlooped palstave axehead.
A raised stop-ridge survives on the find.
On one face immediately below the stop ridge is a “shield” shaped moulding.
Extensive surface loss has occurred along the edges of the find, giving the axe a thin irregular form.
The blade is primarily smooth and shallow and likely would have originally extended further along the cutting edge.
This variant is classed by Savory (Savory 1980, 44) to the early part of the middle Bronze Age.

A broken copper alloy unlooped flanged axehead. The axe head is broken into two fragments. Both front and reverse faces of the axe are plain yet have corroded moderately. The cutting edge is crescent shaped, slightly abraded and partially broken at the end of one tip. The blade itself is lenticular in cross section, which may be due to its poor condition. There may be traces of a stop ridge though it is difficult to discern due to the poor condition of the object. The butt of the axe is sub-rectangular and also displays abrasion.
Although the axe may have a stop ridge, which is best f…

A worn flat axe head probably dating to the early Bronze Age. The axe is made of a copper alloy and is sub rectangular in cross-section. The edges are abraded and the original patina only remains in small areas. The axe head is thickest at the centre. The axe head is widest at the cutting edge and tapers towards
the butt. It is unclear the extent to which the cutting edge and the butt may have been truncated through wear, and as such the cutting edge is worn and uneven. The metal is pitted, and very corroded, beneath which the mid-green colour of the copper alloy can be seen. It appear…

An incomplete copper-alloy Middle Bronze Age un-looped palstave axe (circa. 1100-900BC).
The butt of the axe runs to a transverse stopping ridge, shortly after which the axe has been truncated and the blade is missing. The flanges are straight and flat and run the length of the fragment, tapering to terminate at the butt at one end. Towards the break, just past the stopping ridge, the flanges also taper.
Palstave axes were made from a two-piece mould, and had a narrower blade than the earlier flanged and flat types. The prominent stopping ridge as seen in this find was a dis…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A sub-triangular, barbed and tanged flint arrowhead. The arrowhead is quite crude in form. It is manufactured from a mainly opaque mid greenish brown flint but with a band of white around the point, and the tip of the point is translucent orange. The extreme tip of the point appears to have broken off in antiquity. One face of the arrowhead is very slightly concave, the other is very slightly convex. There are two large patches of cortex surviving on both faces of the object. In plan, the two side edges are slightly curvilinear giving the point a narrow and extended appearance. The e…

Description:
(I am grateful to John Llywelyn Williams for the following description & discussion)
The find comprises two fragments of a copper alloy flat axe.
The larger blade fragment was initially thought to be all that survived. This fragment represents the lower half of the axe which has been severed from the butt end at a slight angle. The surface is of a generally uniform mid-brown colour with significant patches of green mottling signifying active corrosion. The fragment is slightly asymmetric in plan with one side gently concave and the other side continuing in a str…

Cast late Bronze Age copper alloy miniature socketed axe. The object is covered in a pale yellowish green patina with patches of dark grey probably representing the dark silts in which it was found. There are very occasional small patches of bright copper metal showing. In profile, the sides of the axe are parallel flaring out abruptly to form a crescent shaped blade at one end and expanding slightly at the socketed end to produce a 'collar' around the mouth of the socket. Viewed on edge, the axe is a distinctly triangular shape with a prominent oval attachment loop projecting …

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Conwy
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Sub-hexagonal shaped flint scraper. The flint is generally a mid-grey colour, however one face of the object is largely covered in a light cream cortex representing the original surface of the pebble. This face is quite irregular and one edge has also been struck producing two small facets where the cortex has been removed. There is no sign of retouch on this edge. The other side represents a large flake surface with a prominent bulb, a plain platform with hammer impact, and short, abrupt, scaled retouch on one of the opposing edges.
Discussion:
The object represents a complete f…

Semi-circular flint object, dark brownish grey in colour. It has a flat back edge which narrows to a sharp semi-circular outer edge. Several parts of this semi-circular edge show signs of short, abrupt retouch. The back comprises two main concave scars with a small area of cortex on one. One face of the object displays a bulb and ripples indicating it was struck off of a larger piece. The other face has multiple concave scars where flakes have been struck from the object.
Discussion:
The object appears to have only recently been ploughed out as it is very fresh and there is litt…

Summary - 5 pieces of flint - 4 waste flakes and one retouched piece.
2 small broad, thick secondary flakes with pebble cortex.
1 small broad, thick tertiary flake.
1 small broad scalar flake fragment, ie probably anvil struck.
1 small convex end scraper. A small thick broad flake with inverse abrupt retouch on the convex end. 31mm X 20mm X 7mm (weight 4g)
Assessment:
The flint is all similar in colour, from mid-brown to mid grey but slightly varied so not all from the same knapping episode. All p…
