This is a cast copper-alloy support for a probable three-legged object, measuring XX cm from tip of the ears to the tail. It takes the form of a hybrid marine animal, with a griffin's head and dolphin-like sinuous body and tail. The griffin's head is rendered in some detail. A small eye is set high on the head behind the beak. There is a transverse moulding where the high forward-curving ears meet the head. Beneath the ears on both sides are two folds or flaps. Behind the head is a projection with a central slot allowing the attachment of the support to the candlestick from which it p…

Weight. Cast circular disc with notches. (No image available.) Weight 9.04g (other dimensions not recorded). (Report by Susan M. Youngs, formerly British Museum). This object is most similar to weight 11 from Gilton, Kent, Grave 66 (Scull 1990, fig. 2), one of the few weight-sets to have been found in grave. When found individually, such things can be impossible to identify reliably (Hinton 2000, 63-6 and 111-2); in this case, the notches enabled the identification to be made. At 9.04 g, the disc is within a reasonable tolerance of seven times a unit of 1.3 g, based on Merovingi…

A very unusual and well-preserved Gilded disc brooch with a carved glass central setting. The copper-alloy circular disc is divided into two zones by bold concentric ribs. The central royal blue glass setting is flat-topped and bears the boldly executed cast impression of a bird with raised wings and hooked beak which is most likely to represent an eagle. The outer ring has surface accretions, but it is very likely to have been decorated with ā€˜Sā€™-shaped motifs. The back surface has a thin white metal coating. The copper-alloy sprung pin has an internal chord and 4-turns and is atta…
