Blue glass bead - GLO-8A7376 similar example Iron age to Early medieval in date Glass bead of probable late Iron Age/early Roman date. The bead is a deep cobalt blue colour and circular in shape. There is a circular hole set off-centre, and one side of the bead is slightly thicker than the other. Around the outer edge of the bead are three white 'dots' in slight depressions on the surface. The depression on one dot is present as only around half of the white glass detailing remains. Another dot also seems to be abutted by a circular filled depression or 'dot' of a gr…

An Iron Age-Roman glass bead, dating 800BC - AD100. This bead belongs to Guido's class 6, Oldbury type.It is made from blue and white glass and is roughly circular in shape, with a hole through the centre formed during manufacture with a mandrel. The white glass forms spirals at various points around the outside of the object. At these points nodules have been formed in the blue glass to emphasise the design. The nodules and spirals alternate between pairs and single features. A similar example has been recorded with the PAS (LON-041951), though that example had a copper alloy rin…

Roman glass vessel: 44 sherds from a cylindrical bottle. Common in the last quarter of the first century and went out of use in the early second century, however were reused in creamtions - such as this example. Not enough of the vessel survives to estimate its height, vessels of the same form vary between a height of 150-400mm, with a body diameter of 80-250mm. This vessel is likely to be one of the shorter examples. The surviving sherds weigh approximately 287.32grams. The vessel is formed from translucent blue glass, with small dispursed air bubbles throughout its core. The sherds w…

Roman glass vessel: Over 100 sherds of translucent blue-green glass. The exact type of vessel is unknown due to the fragmentary remains of the vessel. Most of the sherds only have a slight curvature and form the main body of the vessel. There are 10 fragments which have a more pronounced curvature, which are either from the base the vessel. Only two of these sherds with pronounced curve fit together to provide a curve from which the diameter can be extrapolated to be approximately 160mm. Some of the smaller sherds may be from another vessel (recorded on this database as ESS-08DD77) how…

A post-medieval (late 18th century) witch-bottle found during renovation work in the service wing of Aldham Hall. This bottle was found with a shoe (ESS-A08021) and both are believed to be associated with witch-craft. The small glass bottle is 100mm in height with a base diameter of 29mm. It is of a narrow cylindrical shape with a marked shoulder and short neck leading to a flanged rim. There is a small nipple on the base of the bottle. The bottle is without cork or stopper and contains (?)human hair and at least two pins and other debris. It is generally in good condition with some da…

A glass bead. The bead is circular in plan and slightly bi-conical in section. it has a circular piercing and is of equal thickness around its circumference. The glass is translucent and is a pale blue. It is 17.76mm in diameter, 11.54mm thick and weighs 4.53g. The surface of the bead is slightly abraded and scratched. Glass beads found out of context are often difficult to date with any accuracy, due to their simple form. However, this bead is likely to date from the Roman to Early Medieval period.

Fragment of Roman glass prismatic bottle. The clearly defined 90-degree angle on the fragment shows that it is a body sherd from one corner of a square shaped bottle. Apart from the one clear edge, the fragment is irregular to both sides. It is made from a thick, light blue-green glass with a high number of bubbles. The fragment is 34.48mm long, 4.2mm thick and weighs 4.02g. Bottles with square bodies were in use in the 1st and 2nd centuries. They were used for the transport and storage rather than as tablewares. See Cool and Price, 1995, Roman vessel glass from excavations in Colchest…

Fragment of Roman glass, probably from a conical beaker used for drinking. The glass fragment is colourless, small and irregular. The profile of the fragment suggests it is from the concave bottom of the vessel, perhaps the very centre as there is a central dimple and nipple. The fragment is 1.62mm thick and weighs 0.33g. Conical beakers of greenish glass dominate 4th century assemblages, however there may be evidence that colourless beakers were produced from the late 3rd century (see Cool and Price, 1995, Roman vessel glass from excavations in Colchester, 1971-1985, page 90).

Complete, glass linen smoother. This linen smoother is made from black glass and is circular in plan and a flattened kidney shape in section, being clearly domed on one face and slightly flattened and countersunk on the opposite. Within this countersunk, circular depression are the clear remains of the ‘stalk’ of glass where the smoother was separated by twisting from the maker’s glass rod. The surface has a patchy iridescent quality. It is heavily abraded, with a significant flake of glass chipped from one side on the domed underside. The abrasion and chipped area are worn, sugg…

Fragment of Roman glass bath flask. This fragment represents the rim and the fragmentary remains of the neck of the flask with one complete handle. The rim is flat and circular in plan with a diameter of 37.34mm. The circular opening to the flask, which has a diameter of 14.32mm, is set off centre. Approximately one quarter of the circumference of the neck survives. Attached at one broken edge is the handle. The handle is formed from a separate trail of glass applied to the shoulder of the flask and trailed up the neck to the underside of the rim. It is then looped back to the shoulder…

Fragment of Roman glass. This fragment represents part of a strap handle from a jar or flagon. It is now trapezoidal in shape and is 47.82mm wide, 37.04mm long, 8.54mm thick and weighs 22.22g. The fragment is ridged along one side, which is typical of this style of handle. The glass is a blue green in colour. The object is broken along two edges and has received some damage to one face. Break edges do not appear ‘fresh’, suggesting damage probably occurred in antiquity.
