Object type: WHETSTONE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Object is long and cylindrical in shape but with flattened sides. The object has a head, which appears to be rounded; it then tapers in slightly to a 'neck' and then expands out again. The object has 4 sides but one side has broken off. It has smooth sides, and appears worked. It is thought that this object is a whetstone. A string would have been tied around its neck in order to attach it to something else such as a belt. Similar records on the PAS database are YORYM-F17BB0, HAMP-E48B53 and SF-E9FB63. Its exact date is unknown but it is thought that it may be Medieval. The objec…

Stone Mortar. The diameter of the mortar is 95mm in diameter and the outside depth is 49mm, the weight is 443.0g. It is possibly Roman but could range to post-medieval. It is very coarse which would have made it ideal for grinding spices or food. The mortar was found placed in a stone wall at the home of the finder.

Object type: WORKED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Pembrokeshire

The stone is micaceous sandstone and has been worked to a near-spherical form. There is a flat area with a central indentation. This may have been used as a base, indicating that it may have been used as a decorative architectural feature, of post medieval to modern date. It is also possible that it may have been used as shot from a gun with a 3.5 inch bore. Stone shot was sometimes used before iron shot was introduced in the 17th century

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A polished grey stone axehead, oval in section. It is triangular in shape and has a polished smooth surface. It tapers to a smooth point at the butt-end and tapers on only one side towards the cutting edge. There is slight abrasion at the butt-end point and some worn striations on the tapered face of the cutting edge. On the other side of the edge there is some damage, and reddish brown stone is exposed where bits have flaked off. This damage is possibly indicative of use.
