A complete cast iron cannon ball of Post-medieval date (AD 1600-1700). The object is sub-spherical and has a diameter of 55.6mm (2.1 inches), weight 660 (1lb 7oz).  This would place the object within the diameter range of the Falcon cannon. Alternatively, it is possible that balls of this size were used collectively as grape shot in larger cannon. The cannon  ball is pitted and scaled with  rust flakes  The Falcon cannon came into use during the latter half of the 15th Century and was mounted on wheels to make it more mobile. An incomplete cast iron bell of the post medieval to Modern period (AD1800-1900). The outer side of the bell has two basal rims above which it is decorated with seven raised triangles with the point upwards forming alternate triangles between them. The apex is flat and bears a fragment of a form attachment; the clapper inside the bell is missing. All surfaces of the metal are pitted with corrosion and some edges are very rough. This bell would probably have been used as a doorbell on a small cradle with a rope attached to a clapper. Height: 46.85 mm Thickne…

An incomplete iron bowl of the post medieval period (AD1850-1900). The bowl  is circular in shape formed from a hemisphere,it has a flat base which has been soldered on. The side of the bowl shows no decoration. Due to corrosion the rim of the bowl is broken in several places, large pieces of the base are also missing because of corrosion. All surfaces of metal are very pitted and have corrosion affecting all areas. It cannot be said for certain what this bowl would have been used for however, because of its robust form it was possibly for a utilitarian use. Thickness: 5.16…

Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: County Durham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A spherical, iron cannon ball of post-medieval date, c. AD 1575-1700 in good condition. The ball is slightly flattened and the surface is pitted and brown in colour. The diameter of 49.48mm indicates the ball was possibly used in a Falconet. Falconets were used throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. The falconet was popular, due to its lighter weight as the smallest of the cannons, and endured from the later 16th century through the following century, with slight fluctuations in its diameter and weight of shot. There are numerous examples on this database including NMS-666A8D.

An incomplete iron axehead, probably dating to the Medieval to Post-Medieval period (c. AD 1000-1700). The butt-end of the axehead is wedge-shaped and the socket is sub-triangular in shape. From the butt-end, the axehead narrows before flaring out to form the blade. The width of the butt-end is almost as wide as the blade. Each side of the blade is curved, with one side forming a tighter curve than the other. The section of the blade is wedge-shaped as it gets thinner towards the cutting edge. The axehead has been subject to corrosion, resulting in portions of the metal flaking off…

A complete cast iron shot or cannon ball dating to the post-medieval period (AD1500-1700). Given its weight (131.8g) and size ( Dia. 34.8mm) this is probably a canister shot, being slightly smaller than grape shot. It could also possibly be intended for use in a Serpentine which had a bore of 1.5 inches (38mm). It probably dates to the 16th or 17th century. The object is sub-spherical, and whilst there are no obvious signs of impact damage indicating use is heavily corroded and such evidence may have been lost. Other, broadly similar examples of this type of artefact have been…

A complete cast iron cannon ball of the Post Medieval period ( AD1680-1880). The weight of 217.8gm and diameter of 40.48mm indicate the ball was for use in a Falconet, a mobile weapon mainly used by Naval Forces. Falconets were invented in the late 15th century and were used throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. The outer surface is quite corroded with related discoloration due to oxidisation. There is no sign of any casting seam.

An unidentified, cast iron object, possibly a crossbow bolt or arrowhead. The object is sub-cylindrical in cross-section. It is 55.30mm long and 14.90mm in diameter at its thickest point and weighs 31.91g. There is possible evidence of a narrow point of square sub-section although this may be incidental due to corrosion. The object has an orange-brown patina but is so badly corroded and delaminated as to make accurate identification impossible.

It is, however, in good condition with no obvious damage relating to prior use. No seams or casting marks are visible. The cannon ball size suggests that it was possibly for a 2.5 inch (63.5mm) bore cannon, the Falcon, which fired a ball weighing approximately 2lbs (907.2g).
