Pale grey mottled flint, sometimes very coarse, with heavy off white-grey patina. Very sparse red-brown ferrous staining in places. Both long edges are extensively flaked on one edge and more irregularly flaked on the other, creating an irregular cross section. Both edges are straight but irregular, and there is an irregularly sub-rounded butt. At the opposite end, there is a large, deep flake removal at one edge, but the flake di…

Part of a flint tranchet axehead. The object is irregularly bifacially flaked, with an asymmetrical cross-section. The margins are crude and sometimes markedly 'zig-zag': there are some areas of deliberate battering to blunt them. The cutting edge (now damaged, either in use or post-loss) is formed by removal of an oblique flake across the end of the axe. The break is slightly oblique, the presence of a small bulb on one edge of the break may indicate deliberate 'anvil' breakage. The axe has a matt off white , all over patina with some reddish brown ferrous stains. Date: Mesolithic…
