Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A piece of cast iron shot, probably a cannon ball, dating from the post-medieval period, c.  AD 1550-1750. It is spherical, with a medial casting seam. At one point is a small raised circular area, presumably a plug deriving from the manufacturing stage. The size and weight suggest that this could be for use in a cannon such as a saker which had a c. 3 1/4 to 3 3/4 inch bore. There is no evidence of impact. Measurements: Diameter: 83 mm (c. 3 1/4 inches), Weight: c. 2,250 g It should be noted that there are other uses for iron balls of this size such as in a crush…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An oval single loop iron buckle, probably dating from the medieval period (c. 13th-15th century AD).  It has an oval frame with slightly narrowed bar. The pin remains in place with the loop wrapped around the bar. While corroded, this buckle has no apparent decoration. The buckle has a rough, orange/brown surface.  Measurements: 42 mm in length, 29 mm in width and the pin is 34 mm in length. The weight is 14.00 g. Decoration on these types of buckles are minimal as they were used widely on horse equipment.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post medieval iron cannonball dating to c. AD 1600-1750. The object is spherical with a slightly raised line around the centre. It is corroded on the outer surface. The diameter, of 76mm, corresponds to the Imperial measurement for the second smallest 17th century cannon, the Saker, which was approximately a 3 1/4 to 3 3/4 inch bore. The name "Saker" derives from a bird of prey, and this medium sized cannon could have been manipulated relatively easily. They were popular during the Civil War, particularly during sieges. The form was suspended in the early 18th century after th…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete post medieval iron horseshoe dating to c. AD 1650-1800 of the "keyhole" type. The shoe is rectangular in section. The central aperture is approximately 'keyhole' shaped from which the type derives its name. The object has two visible sub-rectangular nail holes, a subtle full around the outer edge, due to corrosion infill. There is one clear caulkin retained. There is a large amount of corrosion adhering to the surface of the object. Similar horseshoes are discussed in Clarke (1995), see for instance p. 121, no 222, but see also Sparkes (1976) O, pp.20-21. Sim…

A complete iron horseshoe dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1050-1250. The shoe is large and relatively narrow in diameter, arched with a wavy outer edge comprising of three large waves on each side. At the apex of the shoe there is a small area of damage, where the shoe is narrowest and the surface is frayed. The nail holes are filled with corrosion, only one nail is visible in a clear position, on the right hand side adjacent to the lowest wave. It is of the 'fiddle-key' style (Clark (1995) fig. 64a pp. 86), with a large head which protrudes below the shoe and is semi-circul…

A cast iron and possibly lead alloy post medieval shot, dating to c. AD 1700-1820. The object is spherical, which a thickened raised line around the equator. The surface is corroded and now orange due to iron decay. It is unfired and undamaged. The size of the shot suggests it may have been produced for use in small naval artillery, most likely during the late 18th century when naval warfare was particularly prominent in the area. Although found inland, naval supply could explain its presence- the Torbay area was important to naval forces due to its more sheltered position …

A late medieval wrought iron horseshoe, dating to c. AD 1400-1500. The object is uniform in perimeter and calkins are visible at the rear of the shoe, with the outer calkin slightly more pronounced than that on the horse's inner side. Only one aperture for a nail is visible, the remainder are filled in with accretions. It is markedly broader on one side than the other, possibly a feature of the individual animal whose shoe it was, although it is relevant that this broader side is not the side enhanced by the larger calkin. There are three unrecessed unfullered nail holes on each side of the shoe, arranged more towards the forefoot. As is typical of the object type and material, there has been significant corrosion to the surface, which is now darkened and with an irregular surface. An incomplete iron ox shoe of probable medieval to post medieval date (c. AD 1250 - 1900). The ox shoe comprises a broadly C-shaped plate for one half of the cloven hoof of the ox. It is now flattened in cross section, with one possible nail hole visible at the upper end of the shoe. This aperture appears to have been rectangular in shape but has since filled in with iron corrosion, resulting in a circular remnant opening. The outer edge is damaged, but there is a suggestion of possible fitting to the hoof of the individual ox to which it belonged. During shoeing, the ox would ha…

A fragment of an iron dagger of probabe post medieval date, c. 1500-1700. The tip of the blade survives, with a further break removing its very tip. It is triangular in plan, with the blunted broken point, and lozenge shaped in cross section, with the sharp edges falling away from a central rib. The surface is pitted and affected by iron oxide on the outer edge, with some small areas of copper alloy decay present across the surface. Object type: NAIL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An iron nail of unknown date. In overall shape, the nail is mushroom-shaped. The head is broadly square in shape, with the outer edges curving slightly towards the underside. The shank tapers towards a broad point. Iron corrosion and cracks are visible on the surface of the nail. As the item was not recovered from an archaeological context, it is not possible to date this item which could range from the Roman to Post Mediveal periods. Due to the corrosive nature of Devon's acidic soils, an early date is unlikely (although not impossible) and a later Post Medieval date is more likely.
