Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Elaborate quatrefoil-shaped horse harness pendant. It is cast and made of copper alloy. The suspension loop is complete giving a total length of 40mm. This harness pendant appears to be armorial and possibly shows a lion passant guardant on a black (Sable) square field with red (Gules) fleur de lis springing from each side. It is in fair condition, although the decoration is worn. It is very similar to an example from Reepham in Norfolk (Ashley, 2002). This type of horse furniture dates to the medieval period and this example is probably 14th century. Ref. Ashley, S., 2002, Medieval Ar…

A late early-medieval stirrup-strap mount of Williams's Class A Type 10B. Made of cast copper alloy, it is sub-triangular in shape.
