A slightly squashed, but complete late medieval copper-alloy thimble (c. 15th century). The thimble is of cast, one-piece construction, with sides that taper slightly to a domed top. From a central tonsure on the dome, circular pits spiral out, covering the dome's perimeter and all of the sides above a basal plain band, itself delineated by an engraved circumferential groove. Measurements: 22 mm (max.) diameter, 21 mm height, 0.5 mm thick, weight 11.39 g For similar thimbles see Read (2018, 25-28) attributed to the 15th century.

A slightly squashed, though complete, post-medieval copper-alloy thimble (c. 16th century). The thimble is domed, with a large aperture for insertion of the finger to be protected (slightly squashed) and a domed protective top. It is decorated wish a series of pits which travel in a continuous spiral emanating from a single pellet at the apex of the dome. There is a transverse groove just above the base, and small plain band below. Measurements: 23 mm diameter, 18.5 mm height, 0.5 mm thickness, weight 4.79 g For similar thimbles dated to the 16th century see Read (2018, 35).

Description: An incomplete thimble, originally of two-piece composite construction, formed of a main piece of silver sheet curved to create a flared cylinder, and a now missing shallowly convex dome (crown), and slightly squashed. The thimble is scarfed with transverse upper and basal plain bands. Between the upper and lower bands, the sides show geometric curvilinear strapwork infilled with square pits. Within the lower band an engraved inscription reads ‘feare god’. The start of the inscription is indicated by a crudely engraved star. The words are well spaced, with salti…

A silver thimble of post-medieval date, c. AD 1660-1669. This squashed and now incomplete thimble is of two-piece composite construction, formed of a main piece of silver sheet, once curved to create a flared cylinder; the shallowly convex dome (crown) that would have surmounted it is now missing. The main body is virtually squashed together and slightly twisted. A background pattern of adjoining annulets arranged in columns fills the field above a lower band. The band is defined by a ropework/cabled border above and below. On one of the main surfaces, starting around the cen…

A complete post medieval lead alloy palm guard, dating to c. AD 1500-1800. The object is pointed oval in shape, and domed in section, with two distinct circular hollows in the curving side. The edges are somewhat frayed, but the object survives in good condition. The object is covered with a greyish patina, but there are areas with a high shine surviving on the domed face. Palm guards were for use by leather workers to protect the palm whilst stitching. A post-medieval silver thimble, c. AD 1650-1720. The thimble is formed of two pieces of silver sheet, one of which is curved to create a cylinder and soldered to the circular top. It is slender in diameter, with a rounded plain dome at its apex. The continuing pattern of indentations begins just at the perimeter of the dome, with three concentric circles of indentations before the thimble sides descend downwards, with a break in the pattern creating a plain band at this point. The waffle pattern recommences and extends downwards, interrupted by a “strap work” design compose…

Description: The thimble is formed of a single piece of silver sheet, curved to create a cylinder. It is flattened and damaged, with the dome and part of the side sheet missing. There is a background pattern of interlocking annulets, creating a pattern which extends across the surface between two plain bands. Placed within this, just below the upper of the two bands is a design of a heart and crown, which is repeated three times. Dimensions: The thimble is 21.1mm in length and 19.0mm in height. It is 1.9mm thick and weighs 2.70g. Discussion:  Similar thimbles are illustrated in …

A complete copper alloy thimble dating to the post medieval period, c. AD 1550-1700. The thimble is domed, with a regular pattern of circular indents running in a spiral form across the surface. There is a small decorative design just as the dome flattens onto its apex, composed of leaves, or possibly a pair of lis placed close together. This is likely a maker's mark, and other examples are known including SF-D03AE3. It may have been imported from Nuremberg, as the lis maker's mark is known from thimbles produced here, such as the more elaborate SOM-AFDABB. Measurements:…

The thimble is of two-piece composite construction, formed of a main piece of silver sheet, curved to create a flared cylinder, surmounted by a shallowly convex dome (crown). The main body is squashed and damaged, with one end pushed out at the seam and the other pushed in and, further, suffering a loss at the base. A background pattern of adjoining annulets is only interrupted by a cartouche. Similarly, the dome is covered in three concentric rings of annulets, leaving only a small, central pellet undecorated. A copper-alloy open type sheet thimble or 'sewing ring' of late medieval to early post medieval date, c. AD 1450-1600. This thimble is circular in plan with sides which taper inwards from the bottom to the top. The outside is decorated with punched circular indents, arranged fairly regularly in four rows in a spiral. The metal has corroded to a blackened patina. The splayed base was to allow an easier fit on the finger and is also chronologically diagnostic to the late Medieval or early Post Medieval periods (Holmes 1988, 3). A complete medieval to post medieval copper alloy thimble, dating to c. AD 1450- 1550. The outside of the thimble has seven horizontal lines of circular indentations or drilled pits, which are arranged to create a pattern of alternating indentations and spaces. These extend onto the crown of the thimble, curving to form a leftward pointing spiral from five lines of indentations. Running around the lower edge of the thimble is an incised line. The inside is undecorated. The lower perimeter is slightly bent, with approximately 40% of the circumference of the circle pressed inwards cr…

A complete but fragmented and distorted silver thimble dating to the Post-Medieval period, c. 1600-1700. The thimble is of two-piece construction, consisting of a sheet metal base/wall (now broken), that originally would have been soldered together at one edge, and a separate domed crown that would have been soldered to the top of the wall’s sides. The base/wall is fragmented into three irregularly size sub-rectangular sheets. These breaks are clean and sharp running vertically down the wall of the thimble revealing a silver core to the metal. Traces of the solder that would …

A medieval to post medieval copper alloy domed thimble dating to c. AD 1450-1600 (Read, 2018, 26). The thimble is slightly bent out of shape, with the lower (foot) perimeter particularly affected. It is decorated with drilled circular pits arranged in a leftward spiral, with the spiral ending just before the crown. This area is damaged, but preserves the remnants of a possible maker's mark, perhaps a reversed RR or two eagle's heads. The lowest band of pits around the foot of the thimble are particularly deep, noticeably deeper than those close to the crown . There is no further dec…

A Late Medieval to Post-Medieval copper alloy thimble, probably dating to c. AD 1400-1600. The thimble is cast, domed and with sloping sides. Circular hand drilled pits are arranged in a concentric spiral extending from the base, although leving a narrow plain rim, to the apex, leaving a small bald tonsure. Dimensions: Height 21.7mm; diameter 23.5mm; thickness of walls c. 1.8mm; weight 14.19g. Holmes (1988) notes that bald tonsures are a more characteristically early feature and cease to be seen on thimbles after c. 1650, whilst the spiral arrangement of pits was increasingly ub…

A Medieval to Post-Medieval copper alloy thimble, probably dating to c. AD 1400-1550. Dimensions: height 20.8mm; diameter 20.7mm; weight 5.86g. Holmes (1988) notes that bald tonsures are a feature of earlier thimbles, becoming less common with time and disappearing by c. 1650, whilst the arrangment of pits into a spiral from base to apex had become ubiquitous by 1500. The slightly i…
