A small, incomplete cast lead-alloy object in the form of a crown, possibly from a pilgrim badge and likely medieval to post-medieval in date, c. AD 1400-1600. The bottom edge of the crown is uneven and damaged and was once part of a larger object, which would have continued below the crown. The object is flat on both sides. The entire surface of the front shows a crown and the reverse of the object is undecorated. At the apex of the front of the object is an oval-shaped knop and on either side of this, there are tiny pellets running down the ed…

A complete gilded silver figure depicting St Barbara, possibly once part of a pendant but repurposed as a badge. The object is anthropomorphic, and cast in the shape of a female figure. She wears a long floor length robe which is draped over her left shoulder, exposing a square neckline above a front fastening gown. She also wears a triangular fillet which is emphasised by three horizontal lines which may be intended to represent decoration or less likely corsetry. She holds a long object, likely a palm branch, in her left hand, and her right arm encircles a long tower which is…

A complete cast lead alloy late medieval pilgrim badge depicting Saint Giles, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1300. The badge consists of a rectangular plate with a sub-circular sewing loop projecting from each corner. A further large sub-circular projection at one short end accomodates the halo'd head of the saint, who is depicted standing, bearded and tonsured with his head within a beaded halo. The saint holds a crozier in his left hand and with his right is obscured but is probably raised in blessing (by comparison to other examples). The base of the saint's vestments are fil…

A Medieval cast open work copper alloy pilgrim badge, probably dating to the 15th century. The badge is cast into the form of St. Michael trampling and spearing the devil at his feet. St. Michael is depicted in what appears to be plate armour, holding a long, transverse spear across his body. This is topped with a cross and has its point at the devil's head to the lower right. He holds a plain, sub rectangular shield which tapers to point at the level of his waist in his left hand and his right leg is bent slightly with his right foot parallel to the plane, resting on the lower tor…

A Medieval silver gilt pilgrim's badge commemorating St George, dating from the late fifteenth to the early sixteenth centuries. The badge depicts St George wearing fifteenth century style armour (Robinson, 2011) on horseback with a curving sword in his right hand raised above his head. The horse is advancing right with front legs raised. The dragon lies defeated at the feet of the horse. On the reverse is a circular loop for attachment to clothing. The badge is in good condition; most of the gilding remains intact on the surface and finer details such as St George's armour and the ho…

A Medieval lead alloy Pilgrim badge or devotional aid representing Adam and Eve with serpent and the Tree of Life. The item has broken into parts; five fragments remain. Other fragments are missing; including the part representing Eve. This item is interesting as it is the only type to have been recorded to date (pers comm, Geoff Egan 2006).
