A flint knife dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-2350 BC. The object is formed of a tertiary flake of mid grey flint, with large areas of irregular paler patinisation across both the dorsal and ventral faces. There is one distinct area of blackened patina on the ventral surface. It is leaf shaped in plan and plano-convex in section, with neatly arranged intrusive scalar retouch present. While the shape is more defined and deliberate, akin to others of the "laurel leaf" class (compare NARC-FD9C1C, WAW-115F81 and particularly DOR-6568CD), it is also reminiscent of Neoli…

A fragment or roughout of a possible Neolithic knife, dating to c. 3000-1800 BC. The object is formed of a dark grey flint, although this is entirely covered in an exceptionally consistent layer of patinisation. It now appears pale grey and almost white, with patches of iron staining on both the dorsal and ventral faces. It is pointed oval in cross section, and bullet-shaped in plan, rectangular with a pointed proximal end which is nonetheless slightly rounded. It is extremely consistent in its symmetry when viewed in section, and parts of the surface appear to have undergone th…

A complete post medieval copper alloy pommel from a knife or small dagger, dating to AD 1500-1650. The object is square in plan, with a broad square base, a narrowed waist emphasised by incised lines, and a cube with slightly rounded corners placed atop this. There is a central aperture for attachment, which is circular and placed slightly off centre. The base and upper cube have a shape that is reminiscent of a puffed hat. Measurements: 11.1mm length, 13mm width, weight 8.62g.

A pommel from a medieval to post medieval copper alloy knife, dating to c. AD 1400-1600. The object is spherical in form, and solid in composition, with a globular appearance. The sphere is formed of a thickened central portion with a far more slender upper and lower smaller cylinder underneath, and a thickened globular terminal knop. The design of this example appears to be a midpoint between more elaborate post medieval pommels such as NLM-1DEBBB and earlier medieval forms such as SUSS-5420F1, hence the suggested date. Measurements: 17.1mm height, 16.1mm diameter, w…

It is leaf-shaped in plan, and distinctly curved in cross section. The dorsal face has covering low-angle scalar retouch, with very short, low-angled scalar retouch at the very edges. The ventral face is untouched with the bulb of percussion and conchoidal ripple marks clearly visible. The striking platform is also clearly visible. An incomplete probable flint knife of probable neolithic date, c.4,000-2,400BC. Worked from a tertiary blade of pale grey, slightly translucent flint, with some iron staining on the ridge scars, missing its distal end to a natural break and with the proximal end worked away. Very diffuse conchoidal ripples present on the ventral face, and with a single blade-like removal on the dorsal face, again with extremely diffuse conchoidal ripples. Either lateral edge of the dorsal face exhibits long, semi-abrupt, scalar retouch. A posible notch has been worked into the right lateral edge at the…

A Neolithic flint plano-convex knife, probably dating to c. 4000-2400 BC. The tool has been worked from a tertiary blade of pale grey/white flint, which has orange iron stains along the flake scar ridges of the dorsal face. In plan, the blade is an elongated sub-oval; however, the distal end has suffered a diagonal break, leaving the left side of the distal edge in a pointed terminal. The ventral face exhibits a diffuse bulb of percussion below the striking platform, with no prominent conchoidal ripple marks. All edges on the dorsal face display retouch, except for the striking platfo…

A Medieval to Post-Medieval copper alloy composite knife terminal, probably dating to c. AD 1400-1600. The object comprises of a single piece of copper alloy sheet folded around to meet at a soldered join, although it has now broken to the left of this, creating a hollow, sub-rectangular body, with a slightly flared lip at the top edge. A probable cap, originally closing the terminal, has been lost. The sides of the terminal are faceted, creating a hexagonal cross section and with each longitudinal face bearing engraved decoration. The two flanking facets on each side are decorated wi…

A Neolithic flint knife, probably dating to c. 4000-2400BC. A worked tertiary blade with the striking platform surviving at the proximal end, a relatively diffuse bulb of percussion has been further thinned by retouch. In plan the blade is an elongated sub-oval, with a broadly plano-convex cross section. The dorsal face is extensively worked, featuring covering, semi-abrupt, sub-parallel/scalar retouch, with a small area of abrupt, sub-parallel retouch on the centre of the right mesal edge. There is long, low-angle, sub-parallel/stepped retouch at the proximal end, probably thinning t…

A Post Medieval copper-alloy knife terminal or end-cap from a scale-tang knife, probably dating to c. AD 1500-1650. The cap is D-shaped in plan with a sub-rectangular/sub-oval cross section, a transverse rectangular slot is cut into the base which still holds a large, sub-rectangular fragment of the iron tang. The cap is decorated with a series of incised grooves radiating out from the centre. Dimensions: Maximum length 23.5mm, not including the tang 12.4mm; width 15.9mm, of tang 12.6mm; thickness 9.2mm; weight 7.19g. Read (2001: 88-89) illustrates a number of knife caps of the …

A late medieval to postmedieval copper alloy knife handle. The handle has stright sides; the end terminates in a trilobe. There are traces of decoration visible on the blade and traces of gilding also remain; however, rust obscures the detail. The rust is presumably from the tang of the iron blade, which probably still partially remains inside. See fig 42, p 182, Salisbury Museum catalogue for a general examples.

A medieval copper-alloy knife handle with pellet and openwork design. The handle is sub-cuboidal, having a rounded top end, and bevelled edges. The openwork design comprises two parallel rectangular apertures, located centrally, which link the two widest faces of the handle. Other decoration to the upper face consists of two groups of three incuse pellets, located above and below the holes, respectively. Part of a corroded iron blade projects from a slit in the base of the handle. A mid-14th to early 15th century date is suggested for this handle, based on its similarity to stra…

Cast copper alloy knife handle, in the form of a male figure. He is standing, holding a musket in his right hand and possibly a powder flask in the left. He has long hair and a small pointed beard, in the manner of a Royalist. A small dog stands behind him. It is cast in two parts, fixed around a whittle tang (now lost). It is post medieval in date, and possibly 17th century, a time figurative knife handles or hafts were popular.
