A copper-alloy possible harness fitting dating to the medieval period c. AD 1100-1200. The object has been cast in the form of a fish or a dolphin with an elongated body which spirals around to form a ring. The tail flares out in a semi-circular shape and projects from the back of the ring. There is a rectangular socket projecting from the upper side edge of the ring. There are two fins which project each side of the head to form horizontal bars; the tip of the one of the fins is broken and missing. The body of the fish is decorated with a scale-like pattern and there ar…

An incomplete copper-alloy harness junction that dates to the early medieval period (c. 11th century).  It has broken at one end off a boss, and may have once been a double-ended junction from harness strapping. As an alternative, this could be the attachment loop of a small bridle bit. The boss is broadly in the form of a domed oval, with a concavity on the reverse. The short bar that emanates from the complete side is semicircular in cross-section. It soon meets a slightly thicker terminal loop, which is oval and plain. The loop is, though, bevelled, externally on the fron…

An incomplete Roman copper-alloy strap-mounted and skirted terret ring. Only the base of the main ring now survives, with slightly more surviving one side of the skirt. It is broadly of D-shaped cross-section, with flat interior with rounded corners. It is moulded externally into a series of segments of differing sizes; not enough of the ring survives to discern a pattern. Below the main ring is a waist below which the hollow skirt expands. The skirt was apparently formed of two 'leaves', one now highly abraded. The other main part of the skirt is sub triangular. Set below, the…

An early medieval strap link of Anglo-Scandinavian origin, dating to AD 1000-1100. The link is composed of two circular loops, one of which is filled in with iron corrosion. They form the terminals of a pair of arms which are D-shaped in profile, and are joined by a raised circular central boss. The two loops have bevelled edges.  According to Williams, 'Anglo Scandinavian Horse Harness fittings' (2007, p1), these harness links are Anglo-Scandinavian in origin and derive from the Viking Ringerike style, as seen on examples where the boss is a distinct…

A post medieval harness mount, with leather still adhered, dating to c. AD 1500-1600. The mount is cruciform in shape, with a central openwork design composed of four oval apertures arranged around a square cross. The exterior is floreate with trefoil terminals on each side of the cross, and the small square frame lying between these more elaborate designs. The reverse is largely obscured by a fragment of leather which survives, blackened and damaged, attached to two pointed lugs. Leather survivals adhered to metallic artefacts are not uncommon, and examples of earlier ar…

An incomplete copper alloy terret ring of Iron Age to Roman date, c. 100 BC - AD100. The broad circular sectioned loop survives, but the strap bar is now missing, as are any decorative collars attached to it. The loop is markedly thicker on its enclosed side. There are traces of red enamel decoration, which appears to have been placed in two linear bands either side of a raised copper alloy ridge which lies in the centre of the upper face. The reverse also bears some red enamel traces, although no clear decorative scheme can be made out. An example of Lewis (2015:87)'s simp…

A copper alloy ring, probably a harness fitting, dating from the Roman to post medieval period, c. AD 43-1800. The ring is circular in shape and in section, with a slightly flattened upper surface. It is roughened and pitted, but two distinctly raised nubs survive at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions, possibly indicating the points above which attached leather straps should not be positioned. Measurements: 49.5mm diameter, 8.2mm width, 7.6mm thickness, weight 26.16g.

A medieval to post medieval copper alloy harness ring dating to c. AD 1000-1800. The ring is flattened slightly on its upper and lower surfaces, with rounded edges. There are signs of wear at three distinct points, suggesting it may have been used at a point where three straps may have met, possibly on a bridle. There are suggestions of iron corrosion here which may represent other pieces of the harness which are now missing. A large number of these rings have been recorded on the PAS database, including WMID-012331 and LIN-50AF93, but their dating remains broad due to the…

An incomplete gilded copper alloy harness mount dating to the medieval period, c. AD 1250-1350. The object is formed of a  circular central boss, which is convex, with a set of eight scalloped knops which extend from it at regular intervals, giving it the appearance of an eight pointed star, or more plausibly, a sunburst design. The scalloped knops are also very slightly convex, with hollows beneath each one. The scalloping appears to be incised rather than cast, and the design of it is irregular and varies between the individual knops, with some composed of five diagonal li…

A near complete copper alloy harness fitting of Iron Age date, c. 250-150 BC. The object is a form of terret, sub-circular in plan with a straightened attachment bar. This bar is more clearly and consistently cylindrical in cross section, and its ends are marked with bulbous circular studs. The ring then resumes its more slender cylindrical cross section, before thickening further to two flaring cups which join together at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions to close the terret ring. Each of the bulbous studs is flanked by two lines which emphasise their position. There are further inc…

A copper alloy harness fitting of the post medieval period, c. 1600-1750, possibly 1709. The ring is circular in plan with a slight irregularity to the shape of the circle resulting in a slight point. It is rectilinear in cross section with a thick plain band. There appears to have been an inscription on the side surfaces of the band, one of which is legible and reads 1709. CORN-CF2497 is similar in form, and notes that Read (2001) illustrates a similar annular pendant attached to a bar mount from South Somerset on page 43, No.374, which is dated to the 17th century.
