An incomplete copper alloy probable furniture mount of Roman date, c. AD 100-400.  The object comprises a pointed oval plate, atop which is attached two stems which flare and curve around to form two facing spirals. They are broken just above the vertically raised point of the twin stems. The curving spirals give the impression on one side of possible facing zoomorphic decoration, but this is speculative. On the other side they are more solid and are solely geometric forms of decoration. These decorative elements are affixed to the lower plate with a circular rivet which ext…

An incomplete copper alloy post medieval possible furniture fitting, dating to AD 1700-1800. The object is formed of rectangular plate with rounded corners, in the centre of which is a circular aperture. Attached to this are two extending arms which rise and flare away from the plate, with rounded terminals which nonetheless remained flattened in section. At first glimpse this object was assumed to be a form of swivel or strap fitting, but on closer inspection it seems more likely to be related to forms of post medieval furniture fitting such as SWYOR-461949, which has a ver…

An incomplete copper alloy drop handle from a furniture fitting, dating to c. AD 1700-1800. There is a deep V-shaped notch at the centre of the upper bar, it is particularly thick at this point, before sloping downwards to a horizontal thickened rib. At this point it also narrows considerably to a more slender rectangular foot, which flares outwards to the thickened rib. Below this rib is an open rectangular loop. The surface is decorated with incomplete upward pointing triangles, and traces of yellowish white enamelled survive marking out the first of these decorations. The…

An incomplete cast copper alloy furniture fitting / escutcheon plate of late post medieval date (1650-1750). The plate is probably from a draw from a chest or similar piece of furniture and is decorative in nature. It is broadly rectangular in plan with expanding and contracting sides and relatively flat in cross section. Damage has occurred to the outer edges and resulted in the formation of what appear to be lobes, but are really the result of damage in the soil. The decoration present consists of an incised geometric pattern formed from incised lines punched crescents, annulets and…

An incomplete cast copper alloy furniture fitting or possible stud/mount, of probable Roman date (c. AD 43-410). The object is domed in shape, with a pointed top expanding and widening to a circular base. In the centre of this base is a thick cylindrical shank which connects to a circular flattened attachment. The upper portion appears to have once been hollow, with the lower surface of the base formed of a separate sheet of copper alloy that has been attached after the first casting. The point of the stud is damaged, with further damage around the circumference of the upper sectio…

A postmedieval to modern copper alloy furniture fitting; possibly a drawer pull. The item is circular in plan with a rectangular integral attachment loop at the top. The front is decorated with concentric rings; the back is plain. The back has a small projection which would have prevented the item from lying flat against a surface. Overall length: 44.5mm; diameter of circle: 25.5mm.
