An extremely worn post medieval lead alloy cloth seal, dating to AD 1800-1900. The object is extremely worn and the design does not survive in good condition, its perimeter is frayed and surface is irregular. There is a design of a standing female figure in classical dress bearing a staff, gesticulating towards a number of busts placed within circles. There are two busts in one ring, and one in another. There are numbers in a 19th century style font placed beneath these, which read "1857" beneath the single bust and "1850" beneath the double bust. Given the context, they could po…

A lead alloy cloth seal dating to the post medieval period, c. AD 1570-1620. Both pieces of the seal survvie, and the tab which once joined them is cleary visible if broken. The main inscription reads: DUYTS/ COLCESTER / BAYE/ 1571 - There is also an unclear inscription in the legend around the outside of the other half of the seal. The central heraldic motif is also unclear and there is damage in the form of two perforations. Geoff Egan notes that the use of Dutch suggests a first-generation immigrant milieu. These particular seals are so far only known from Londo…

A lead alloy bag or cloth seal dating to the post medieval period, c. AD 1700-1900. The seal is damaged with a large depression in its centre. The initials SC remain visible, and beneath them is a motif which may be an anchor. Anchors are known on Russian flax seals, but this example appears slightly different in its composition, although the initials S.C. are known from CORN-2291B3 which is a seal belonging to the Russian firm of S.C. Rivaz, which failed in the early 19th century. Measurements: 24.1mm diameter, 4.9mm thickness, weight 12.0g.

A uniface copper alloy bag or bale seal dating to the post medieval period, c. 1600-1800. The object is damaged and its original circular shape has been transformed into a crescent topped by a triangle, closely fitted to the decorative design. This depicts in relief a three masted sailing ship under full sail. The ship appears to be a galleon or man o'war style ship, with its carefully depicted multi level decks. The lowered forecastle is slightly awkward in its depiction, but has been deliberately emphasised. Particular attention has also been paid to the wooden balcony around t…

A complete post medieval cast lead Russian cloth seal, for hemp or flax, dating to the 18th to 19th century. The seal consists of two joined discs, one showing the arms of Russia, a double headed eagle, with an inscription in Cyrillic above; the other is plain. The original inscription would have read Санкт-Петербург (Saint Peterburg) to indicate the port of origin but unfortunately only the letters бург are now visible. As SUR-D58F17 reminds us, seals bearing the state arms of Russia, a double-headed eagle usually holding an orb and scepter which is stradd…

A complete post medieval lead alloy cloth alnage seal dating AD 1550-1750. The two discs and the rivet survive. The rivet, which is integral to and projected from one of the discs, was pushed through the central hole in adjacent one, before the two discs were pressed together. Most discs of this period were stamped with an inscription and a design, often a portcullis as Egan (1994: 9) notes that it was "the main design for alnage seals in the late Tudor period... and continued in use into the early seventeenth century", but this particular example appears to have been stamped wi…
