An Iron Age 'Duro Boat' gold quarter stater dating from c. 80 - 50 BC. The following comments are from Ian Leins, British Museum: 'The stater was produced in Dorset, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and surrounding counties in about 80 - 50 BC. It is published in the major catalogues of Iron Age coinage (details below). The front is an abstract design apparently based on a boat. The back is even more abstract, making it difficult to determine the original inspiration for the design, although it is often described as a 'thunderbolt'.
