Postmedieval copper alloy Irish halfcrown of James II (1685 - 1691). The coin is dated to 1690, and is known as 'gunmoney' coinage. Gunmoney was produced to pay for James II failed attempt to regain the English crown after his deposition in 1689. Gunmoney was made from a variety of melted down scrap base metal including metal from cannons, and would have been used as a token coinage to be exchanged for silver after the war.
