Copper alloy Roman coin. This type of coin is known as an 'As' and is of the emperor Nerva (96 - 98 AD). Much of the original surface has been lost due to cleaning. However, it is possible to see the head of the emperor facing right, above which the letters 'IM...' are just visible. Even though the coin is worn, it is still very important that it has been recorded as it helps to advance our understanding of the Romans in Devon.

Roman copper-alloy as, probably a contemporary copy of Claudius (41- 54 AD) (Reece Period 2). The coin is very worn, but there is a left facing head on the obverse and possibly traces of Minerva on the reverse. (Checked by SM). Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M.
